Tennessee @ Kentucky Game 3 Thread - 1 PM

I see no scenario where a proven baseball coach would come to UT. School has a reputation for not supporting the program like others in the SEC. To blame CDS for all the problems is absurd. From scholarships to promotion of the team, everything is lacking.

I tend to agree with Kendell Rodgers, we may need to think outside the box and with Helton over there, this is the time Sax.

Kyle is done with college ball, no trip to Hoover probably...I agree some sweeping changes need to be made, but we just got swept by UK, we were out scored 30-10 with a first year HC at the helm. UK, not Vandy or Virginia.

Not blaming him for all the problems and I haven't seen many that have; but that doesn't mean he deserves to keep his job.

For crying out loud, this is his 6th season, not his 2nd. How long does he get?

The first thing that has to go is the mindset that what's at Tennessee is so bad that it's not possible for someone to come in and win.

I don't buy that.

Again, not saying that improvements aren't needed in facilities or whatever. Better put, not saying upgrades wouldn't be helpful.

But, I'm not buying that it's so bad Tennessee can't get an NCAA bid every couple of years or whatever.

About Todd Helton: exactly what IS his role at UT? I was excited when he came in, but it's a mystery. I've been told that UT doesn't allow Hope scholarships for baseball like other SEC schools. With only 11.5 full scholarships divvied up for all the baseball players, it's a mess.

It appears this was the last game we will get to watch. The last 4 aren't listed as games on the SEC Network+ on UT's schedule.

no, and doubtful that Mizzu will carry them either. They may be the only athletic department in the SEC that cares less about baseball than TN does...sad!

It's at Tennessee, so it's UT's responsibility to make it available on SECN+, not Mizzou's.

In fact I would bet if it was at Mizzou, it would be on SECN+.

Mizzou broadcasts mid-week games and I think has done all home SEC games.

As of now, yep, the UT/Mizzou series is the only series not on TV or online next week.

On top of that, every team except Ole Miss has their midweek game on SECN+, and that's because Ole Miss is at Arkansas St.

Beyond pathetic.

I got the sense that several people thought he should keep his job if Tennessee made it to Hoover.

Based on posting today, I think it's clear at least 2 people here think this; in fact I'm not sure making Hoover is even a requirement for them.

His official title is Director of Player Development. I don't think he can be an instructional coach on the field, but I believe he can "advise" them off the field. I think he's looking for something to do in retirement and this is a chance for him to see if he wants to go in the direction of college baseball. He's around the team as his schedule allows.

I don't know about that, isn't that tied to the lottery deal? If so, they use that I believe. That's more up some of the other posters alley.

I don't believe Todd has his undergrad degree at this point, either, and that would be a requirement to be hired as a full time coach at UT. I have been told that he is working on earning it, but I don't know that for sure.

I do know that he is enjoying being "home" and spending time with family members and friends he grew up with. Todd is an avid outdoorsman, and he spends a lot of time taking advantage of those opportunities, which are plentiful in this part of the country. He has more money from his MLB days than he will ever need in his lifetime, so I just don't know that he has the motivation to spend the time recruiting and coaching that it takes to be an SEC baseball coach.

Baseball players are allowed to receive the lottery schollies if they are in state students and they qualify for them academically just like other students must do.

I wasn't suggesting he be the coach, just answering a question regarding his role with the team...

However, I am glad he's around the program if they decide to make a change. He's already made a comment about us being behind other SEC teams, that's good for Currie to hear, especially coming from him.

Understand. Didn't mean to infer that you were. Just a bit of preemptive discussion, because we all know a lot of folks are going to be citing his name as a potential coach.

I never understand that line of thinking, it has almost no chance of ending well, half the fanbase will end up hating a former player they used to love.

generally speaking, very good players (HOF caliber) typically make terrible coaches....
