Tennessee Lady Vol News

wish lady vols could get refs like where calling men's game today. stay out of the game called a fair game. no cheap fouls or wrestling going on just baketball.

I've always said that most officials for the women's game aren't quick enough to keep up with the faster players we see now, and that they end up making too many anticipation calls because of it.

But then, that obviously doesn't explain all the horrible calls/no-calls they also are making while standing 6 feet from them. It's mindboggling.

Not going to happen. Refs, fans and many coaches are sexist and believe women’s bodies are too fragile for contact.

It's just the opposite really. They think they are too uncoordinated to control themselves so they allow a LOT of contact that wouldn't be allowed in the men's game. Just ask Tamari how she liked that ride Rhyne took her on. But they make up for that with anticipatory calls for fouls that never happen.

But the biggest difference is that the men's refs get a much higher percentage of the calls right and are not as obviously biased as the refs on the women's side.

That was a really clean game the men played today so there wasn't much for the refs to do. It probably helped that it was a blowout.

Men's games have higher skilled refs in general. Like it or not, women's games will continue to get the JV staff until they grow their sport.

That’s funny, I was thinking just the opposite. Sure, there’s blocking going on in the men’s game when a player gets close to the basket, but in our games, players are allowed to totally wrap their arms around Tamari constantly. She has to physically fight to move anywhere whether she has the ball or not. The mens game looks cleaner because that’s not allowed. Tamari was literally pulled off the court onto the floor by Howard, and nothing was called. I have not been seeing the grabbing, holding, hooking arms, and wrapping arms around the players in the mens games.

And I believe players are actually being coached to grab, pull, wrap-around, FOUL on every possession because I think many coaches are gambling that it won't be called -- and they are usually right. The way Tamari is mauled on every play cannot just be accidental. Opponents are deliberately holding on to her, banking on assumption they can use that advantage until someone calls it.

Sadly, this tactic has made watching the games a little less enjoyable for me.

It's like the old UK teams under Mitchell, or even UCF. They will force the refs to call the foul and see how much they can get away with before the whistle blows, then adjust accordingly. Unfortunately, the other team has to also adjust their expectations for what will be called.

The other thing that players are coached to do is flop. Honestly, they need to start penalizing floppers. It's gotten to the point that it's not even funny anymore.

Those refs are getting paid $3,000 per game and most of them are officiating a minimum of 2 games per week. Don’t cover up incompetence with an assertion that they are not being paid very much.

Interesting. Is that the rate for the NCAA Tournament, or all season? I wonder how many games a year would be an average number for an official to work over the five months of a season.

One more thing I wonder: Why in the hell didn't I go into officiating?

My source is Maria Cornelius. She’s done her research. It doesn’t matter if we think refs already make enough $. To get the good refs, need more $.

I don't have a handy reference but I believe in the storm created by the documented inequality between the men's and women's NCAA tournaments last year (it was always there, but just highlighted last year), everything for the tournaments are now equal in terms of travel, hotels, workout equipment, meals, both called March Madness, and I believe equal pay for the refs. Does anyone else remember hearing this about the refs too. If not, I will research this after work tomorrow and verify.

Is that the same as what the mens refs are being paid per game?

i do think tenn getting ace who do you think will sign local knoxville girl?

Highly doubt she ends up at Tennessee. If that were going to happen I would suspect it already would have. I can’t find any updated information on her. Have a feeling she’ll end up at a smaller school.

Never know though
