Tennessee Lady Vol News

How does Avery Strickland's play compare to Tess Darby's? Who is better on defense and who is the better shooter? The two will likely be competing for minutes.
The number one priority is to find an elite scoring guard and if we don’t, then it doesn’t really matter between the two of them who gets mind because we are doomed.

This team will finish in the top 3 again this year. Was just hoping to see them move into that top spot.
With this roster top 3 will be difficult, even making the tourney will be a challenge in my opinion. But if we do make it, I can’t see us winning more than one game. But that can change maybe if Rickea demands the ball more and dominates while having a few 30 point games, but she will have to take more shots and carry the team.

If a starting line-up of Key, Dye, Burrell, Darby, and Walker made the Sweet 16 in 2021-22 (with Puckett, Striplin, and Miles playing double-digit minutes off the bench), then I see no reason why it would be difficult for next year's roster to "even make the tourney" or win more than one game.

But most of the teams are getting better through the portal this year and we are behind, I have no doubt Rickea can carry us if but only time will tell.

I think the only time will tell part of your post can be carried to the teams diving into the portal including us. If you don't think a healthy Wells isn't going to steady the ship i don't know what to tell you. I said last year the biggest loss to SC this year would be Henderson and it was. Also, not knocking the kid, but HVL is a baller but you just can't pop her on any team. Morrow is a beast but her team at Depaul was literally BUILT around her that won't happen at any other school other than maybe Southern Cal. So again, wait and see. Jess Walz is in the portal by necessity too and people are praising him for landing all the talent (which he has done really well) but it's because he didn't have a 2023 signee as well from HS but that's gone unnoticed.

I look at teams that were successful like MD, Indiana, Iowa. They all had 1-2 stars but it was the type of play and personnel that made them successful.

There are other teams who have had more 5 star additions and transfers last year that didn't make it as far as us... Again, it's wait and see and also hoping to land the right pieces because winning is what matters at the end of the day.

I think we have addressed the three point shooting problem we had with the team. No matter what most posters think of Ace and I have some doubts in certain areas of her game as well. She can shoot the three even better than she did at Pitt last season. So can Destinee along with Tess we have three viable three point shooters. I am hoping to see Rickea improve from 30 percent in this stat to about 35 percent. We have yet to address the rebounding issue even though it could be under control if Tamari is 100 percent recovered from illness that resolves quite a bit of it. My thoughts are that we are fine offensively and I think the turnovers are going to be way down because Destinee does not commit many and she will be handling the ball the most. The two key issues in winning any basketball game are rebounding and low turnovers. It won't win you the game everytime, but probably more than 85 percent of the time it will. So I think we need a couple players that can rebound, maybe a lock down defender to take on the other teams best offensive perimeter player. If we get this help on the team were ready to play anybody. I say this because we don't know how much Tamari can play or if she will even be recovered to play.

And Jasmine Powell was top 10 in the SEC and top 100 in the entire NCAA is A/TO ratio. And while Horston created a ton of opportunities, it's no secret that turnovers were probably her biggest issue at Tennessee. This will be Kellie's first team without Horston, for better or worse. Others are going to have to step up with the rebounding (and/or we need another portal pickup), but last year was by far Kellie's best team in terms of turnover rate and A/TO ratio, and I see no reason why next season shouldn't be even better.

2 to 1 assist to turnovers is huge for the Lady Vols. Powell only played about 20 minutes a game, yet finished in the top 6 for Assists in the SEC. I don't think people give her enough respect. Destinee Wells needs to learn the ropes at Tennessee at the point guard position, but she will be very good and I think she may play off the ball some giving her some scoring opportunities from the 2 spot.
