Tennessee Lady Vol News

the thing is this type of system depends on two things,,out-endurancing and volume shooting....but,,,once you get into the upper echelons of the NCAA teams,,,pretty much all of them have depth and athletes to match us,,,it is then that volume shooting and scoring comes into play and 3 for 26 shooting threes will kill us every time
Preach to the choir. If only they'd been warned this might happen . . .

Seriously, CKC has said since the first workouts she had with them last spring that her biggest worry was 3 pt shooting. She wasn't wrong.
Not just a loss to SC should be a loss to anybody. Spencer after a great start has been in a slump, Jewel comes and goes game to game same for Darby, Puckett has never found it this season. Everybody else should be looking mid-range and driving the basket.
Truthfully, all have reverted to their mean, except poor Sara who's regressed. I love SS down and mourn that we didn't have her last season but I've always been afraid we were on a shooting bubble with her. Her % has always been low. And no need to recount the inconsistency against top competition of the others.

That said, all are capable of going on a tear and it would absolutely great and incredibly helpful if someone does. Would love to see them, and Jill, end their careers on a positive note.

it comes with knowing and reading your personnel...coaches and players!
"The right words",,, its not just a motto
People. Always the damned hardest part. If all you had to do was teach physical skills it would be so much easier.

Seriously, I think it's a very elite coaching skill, esp with players who have always depended on physical skill.

To me the hardest part of coaching is keeping up with the details during games, from the Xs and Os to making quick decisions of any sort.

Teaching physical skills was my gift. I could teach a total imbecile how to perform skills as long as they were well coordinated. But ask my scattered brain to draw up a play to win the game? Fuhgettaboutit! 😅

That's why they have all those assistants and flunkies with clipboards and numbers on the bench, and why they have those little coach huddles before the player huddles. I don't think they leave much of the x and os to chance anymore, esp analytical coaches like Kellie and Kim.

I love two aspects of coaching more than all others..Skills and mechanics training and the psychological aspect of pushing the right buttons

I know the game has changed and I'm being graceful about not falling into the "the good ole days" type statements, but those aforementioned coaching huddles drive me insane. Maybe it's the analytics, maybe it's that each assistant coach has their own personal expertise, but I love when a coach calls time out and is coaching the team before they are even sitting down. None of this cue the Jeopardy music lets pow wow before giving the team the heads up. Most time outs (aside from end of game situations) boil down to fundamentals breaking down, too many turn overs, not boxing out, not helping on defense, poor shot selection. I'm not sure that involves a coaching pow wow. But, I digress, haha.

Go Lady Vols! Always hopeful.

We play at one level for 25 minutes per game and a completely different level the other 15. Spearman, Boyd, Hollingshead were ranked in the 30's in their hoopgurlz classes. Puckett was 43. Spencer no ranking and Spear and Latham top 100 but a little lower. Darby was a four star not quite in the top 100. Cooper and Whitehorn top 15 players. I see a really quick explosive team that doesn't play as a team all of the game and plays out of control 20 possessions per games. Not saying we should be undefeated in the SEC but we have more AA's than Vandy or Oklahoma so those two have to be considered underacheiving. SC, Texas, and LSU have more talent. Other than those three no one in the SEC does.
I think comparinghigh school careers (recruiting ratings, all American status) is only one way to compare talent. However, often a better predictor of how a college player will do in a season is how they did in their previous college experience. Unfortunately, our high school all Americans have way underperformed before this year based on their high school accolades. Cooper, Ruby, and Hollingshead were not even close to all conference. Perhaps that is why we had no preseason players on the first or second team all SEC and miles away from having a preseason All American. It is also why we were not ranked in preseason and not predicted to make it to the NCAAs. So, the fact that we are rated, a lock for the NCAAS and fighting for a possible home seed, and that people like Ruby, Cooper, Spencer, and Spearman are greatly outperforming their previous college performances suggest that we are actually playing above what was expected. Moreover, you hear SEC and national media and coaches singing Kim's praises in a way that was not a thing until we outperformed expectations. I think the fact that we have lost 4 games to rated teams based on the last shot of the game lately might make it hard to appreciate the above at the moment. It doesn't mean we are underachieving. It just means we don't yet have a player who is consistently great enough to be a game changer at the end of games.

Tennessee has some players that are playing as good as anyone in the SEC.
It simply just takes time to develop a team. This team has played only 20 games together.
With better execution and a little better luck, this could be an undefeated or 1- 2 loss team. Instead, it’s a 15-5 which is still good in 20 games.

GBO!

We get it @KnoxLikeUs you are a sunshine pumper, and this team needs fans like you. It also needs fans like me who are grounded and expecting and keep it real.

Yes, this team needs time, but it also has to show growth, not just from players but from staff too. Of five losses, 3 were absolutely winnable and due to bad decisions, not by the players but by the bench

Oklahoma:
We went 3 for 19 in the first half on 3's put us behind the 8-ball early... End of game: Inbound pass goes to Cooper, passes to Sara at the arc (9+ seconds left), Sara turns with 8.3 on the clock and shoots for 3 (one point down) without a look anywhere else. ((Coop does not cut to the basket so her number did not get called!))...If this was NOT a called play, why not call a time out before Sara takes a shot that was not called

LSU: 22 to go, foul twice takes about 2-4 seconds and then foul with 10+ to give yourself a shot to win....You never give a team the last shot in a close game,,,never
Never go home with fouls to give in your pocket on a close game,,,Never

Vandy: We went 0 for 16 in a 5pt second qtr. (one made basket and 3 foul shots)...As a coach, you have to see something happening (or NOT happening)!

Texas: Was battle and a well fought, well coached game
South Carolina: The only reason this was this close is bc Dawn had mercy on us!

I am a coach, @KnoxLikeUs and I do not hold players responsible in under 5pt games unless they are the reason! I know this staff is young and new, but the above scenarios don't just happen here at TN, they happen in every level of the game and you use that experience to not let it happen on the grandest stages.

I am 100 behind Kim and this staff and feel that Danny made the right choice, but that does not mean I will give them a free pass. I will hold them accountable in situations I have myself been in,,,and learned from.

The SEC tourney right now is setting up for a winner among the three teams 1.) South Carolina 2.) Tennessee 3.) LSU

This is facts based. Nothing about bias. Nothing about seeking relevance.
Just facts.

If the 2021-2022 Kentucky Wildcats women’s team could win the SEC championship pulling a huge upset against one of South Carolina’s strongest teams in recent years, then this Tennessee Lady Vols team under Coach Caldwell in year 1 which is a better overall team than Kentucky was can win it.

I see similarities between the two teams as far as talent. That Kentucky team was far more talented than their record. This Tennessee team is far more talented than their 15-5 record.

One key difference is Tennessee has far better coaching than Kentucky. Kentucky struggled mostly due to lack of chemistry and discipline during the regular season. Once it clicked, they were tough to beat for any team in the SEC tourney.

Again, this Tennessee team has played better during the regular season and once the players learn to play with discipline, learn to accept their roles, and play as a team they will win big games.

That can all happen this season.

GBO!

I will say one thing is for certain ! You have drank a lot of Orange Kool aid 🙂. These are all possibilities but at some point things are going have to come together. Every game the Big Orange play I expect them to win . That's weather they be under dog or not. I like keeping it one game at a time , just don't like to project several games in advance. GLV 💥
