Didn't say he had a good case.MC, you might get more traction on this in the pointy ballforum
Definitely shot poorly, but the game still came down to so many other reasons as well. Like turnovers on just poor passes and ball handling. Giving up five baskets when we over pressed. Poor free throw shooting. Shooting was awful, but we just needed to do a few other things right to win the game. The rebounding effort is what got us to a tie game with one quarter to play. It was a tough loss we just had to win ten minutes, but we turned it over to much missed as well as missing some shots at the rim.Our game against Texas reinforced a theory I have about what happens when there is an extreme focus on rebounding. I started to notice during the Pat years that if we had a poor game in rebounding, which wasn't often, Pat would talk about how the team was going to really have to focus more than ever on rebounding. Our rebounding was almost always sensational the next game, but our shooting would be subpar. Kim understandably also made rebounding even more the focus than usual in prep for the Texas game given the huge deficit in our previous game. And yet again, we rebounded lights our but shot in the opposite direction. I am not saying for this team that it is the only reason for our poor shooting, as we have several streaky shooters and some who are rarely good at 3-point shots. However, the pattern makes sense with what we have learned in Sports Psychology: What you visualize while shooting has impact on your shot. So, if rebounding has been especially drilled into your head at practice for a week, you are more likely preparing yourself to rebound a missed shot rather than just visualizing a made shot. This is not to suggest that Pat and Kim were wrong to put additional focus on rebounding after a poor effort. I don't have the answer here, just noting the pattern.
That's it. Period. For her system to be top notch she must have three point shooters that are consistent. Not ones that make ten on game and two the next. That is we need to find and that would be players that are 40 percent of better for their careers. Our three point shooting usually dictated whether we won or lost a game.
Exactly. It is just taking a series of 3 pointers without good ball movement rather than going from inside first and then dish to the open three-point shooter. I notice that spurt early in the 3rd quarter in which we made them were all done via drive and penetrate and then dish out. I think they are tight at beginning of the games and at crunch time in the 4th quarter, which seems to be when we are the most likely to take the ill-advised three pointer. In high-stress situations what seems to go first is long-range shooting. Rarely will a team advance if all they have is outside shooting. I believe Kim's system will produce championships if given time and resources. What will be a big help next year is starting with key players who are experienced in the system.
Their defense being good it turned out that we missed 6 points on shots they couldn't guard free throws. The numerous poor passes that were tunovers really killed us late in the game. The final point we pressed to hard on at least five possessions which they broke for easy layups. If we could have eliminated half of this we still win the game in spite of their defense. It'll be a while before I can stomach watching the game on TV, but when I ever do I suspect it'll show even more clearly what I felt for two hours yesterday: that Texas' reputation as a stingy defensive power is for real. Yes, we weren't shooting well even in warm-ups, but it felt all game like all of our shots were being either closely contested or at least severely rushed. My impression was that Texas wasn't giving our three shooters as much time to get off shots as most other teams did this season.
My point is, we definitely didn't shoot well, but Texas' defense was a big reason for that. Vic is a great coach who knew that the key to beating Tennessee was to cut off the head of our scoring snake: the quick-points-building, energy-giving, confidence-building three pointers we NEED to make at a high clip to win.
Vic's players had that shht on lockdown. If Tennessee isn't allowed their big exciting runs on threes, they'll win.
Obviously, yes! I agreed with everyone on all that last night. We definitely made too many mistakes and did things like miss too many u guarded free throws, but Texas' defense caused most of our turnovers, I thought.Their defense being good it turned out that we missed 6 points on shots they couldn't guard free throws. The numerous poor passes that were tunovers really killed us late in the game. The final point we pressed to hard on at least five possessions which they broke for easy layups. If we could have eliminated half of this we still win the game in spite of their defense.
There is an ongoing thread on this at the FB forum. Tell you a lot of the details.Paul Fine Baum show on SEC network
