Tennessee Lady Vol News

Tennessee 44 percent on all other field goal attempts other than three point attempts. I don't see free throw shooting getting better until Burrell returns and Puckett starts getting fouled more. Lifetime stats on players shooting most of the free throws thus far are Key 58 percent, Green 48 percent, Walker 59 percent, Dye 63 percent, and Horston 70 percent. Unless you've worked hard on your free throws during the summer you don't get better than you were the previous seasons. To this point I can't see where any of these players have done that.

I didn't realize Walker was that bad.

I didn't either until I looked it up. That also supports that she should not be taking so many perimeter shots. If you can't make free throws no reason to believe you can make three point shots.

"Key 58 percent, Green 48 percent, Walker 59 percent, Dye 63 percent " ... It's like having 4 Shaq's on the court at the same time, plus one of them is shooting 3s, and none of them are shattering backboards.

Just think, if the LVs had connected on just three three-point shots (3/13 which is 23%) and four additional free throws (12/18 which is 66%), the LVs point total for the USF game would have been 65. I believe that the LVs can, and will, improve their three-point and free throw shooting.

Must by why ppl are so suprised because last season the main ppl at the line were Rennia a 80% free throw shooter hardly ever misses maybe missed like 10 all season and Rae is also pretty good so is Jordan but she missed 3 last game which is uncharacteristic of her

Another area where Burrell handling and getting fouled a lot is a big contributor to the percentage as a team.

Puckett was a 75 plus free throw shooter in high school. She is 3 of 4 this season 75 percent. The problem is shooting four free throws in three games is not helping us much. The big totals have been going to Green, Key, Dye, Walker, and Horston. Horston is the best free throw shooter of the five.

Puckett hasn't shown that she can create her own shot or force the defense to foul her in the paint. If she was able to get off her shot more regularly, then she would.

Rennia, Jordan, and Rae were shooting the most of the free throws last season. Even with Kasi shooting 47 percent and Key 60 we finished the season at 71 percent because of those three players. This season we have Green, Key, Dye, and Walker taking a lot of free throws and that is bad news for making a high percentage. That is why were at 52 and that should improve some, but don't see it hitting 60 until we get Burrell back and Dye starts making some. On this team we really need other players that are active Puckett, Horston, the good Dye, and next Key to get to the line the most. Green is not going to make a high percentage hopefully Walker can maintain 60 percent. Burrell gets back we can start getting close to 70 in games. Of course Darby for over 80 percent but nobody is ever going to foul her.

I'm trying to tell you guys, this team is going to shatter program records for offensive futility. Kellie did an incredibly poor job of putting together the roster. Aside from Burrell, there is not a single strong shooter on the team...

Other than the three point shot some are not that bad. Were making 44 percent if you take off the three point attempts. Three point some players have no reason to shoot them. I agree it is what it is thus far, but not buying into not getting better until it happens for an entire season and then you know it's true. I think Puckett is a very good shooter. Horston is better than last season. After those three right now agree the others are not very good. Dye has a mid-range game 15 feet in which has disappeared in the first three games. We should've of course went out and tried to find a couple really good three point shooters in the portal that didn't happen we'll play with what we have and see how we end up.

It's my belief that FT shooting is basically a combination of mechanics and focus. It's one of the few skills that players can practice completely on their own. It only requires limited space. Upper body strength shouldn't be a factor for anyone. One can even simulate shooting under fatigued conditions by running a couple of sprints in between sets. Or put pressure on by needing to make consecutive shots to avoid a self-imposed penalty such as running, pushups, etc.

I knew a guy who set his h.s. record for FT %, and he shot no less than 100 FT on his own every day.

The players need to understand that we can't afford to leave any easy points off the board, especially now that points are harder to find. There's a reason they're called "free" throws. No need to be creative, fast, tall, or strong. Just have enough pride and dedication to do whatever it takes to make FT consistently. Any scholarship player has the athletic ability to do that.

Having only seen the one game televised on ESPN, how are we doing with setting and using screens, moving without the ball, finding open players, using ball fakes, head fakes, jab steps, crossovers, etc.?

It sounds as though we're still attempting too many spin moves, reverse layups, floaters, and other riskier, lower-percentage shots instead of taking better, easier shots. Is that the case or just the impression given by announcers?

Very little of the first sentence of your post. We could move the ball a lot faster against these zones and get some better three point looks. A lot of the second sentence going on when the easier shot is right there.

  • In her career, she totaled 2,278 points (14.0 ppg.), 624 assists (3.8 apg.), 477 rebounds (2.9 rpg.) and 451 steals (2.8 spg.) while shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 28.7 on three pointers and 64.8 percent from the free-throw line. Brooklynn's high school totals.
  • Averaged 29.0 ppg., 10.8 rpg., 5.4 spg., 3.6 apg. and 1.2 bpg. as a senior in 2020-21 while shooting 54 percent from the field and 73 percent from the charity stripe. Wynn's totals as a senior.

Currently, our three-point shooting is .140 and free-throw shooting is .519, which are 340th and 341th in Division I, respectively (of 348 teams). Our players need to get in the gym and put up shots....a lot of shots. Our FT shooting alone can lose us a bunch of games.
I agree 100%. However, increasing our three-point shooting to 30% and free throw shooting to 70% going forward would help us win plenty of games and by a more comfortable margin.
