If I told you to guess where Heupels salary ranked in the SEC, at $5M per year, where would you guess?

It is 11th out of the current 14 SEC teams

It is 13th out of the future 16 SEC teams

That…has to change if Tennessee is serious about keeping Josh Heupel.

As much as Coach may love Knoxville, the prospects of doubling your salary isn’t something you want creeping in the back of your mind.

Now, I see no signs that Tennessee wouldn’t be responsive. We did in fact give him $1M raise last summer.

But…I can’t help but think of how tight Tennessee has been with its purse strings in previous attempts to land future head coaches.

Given what we have, given the fact that we have leadership in place that seems aligned, here’s hoping they have paid attention to the market where revenues are flowing higher, TV contracts are higher, and therefore are realizing that supporting a higher salary is more justifiable.

Anyhow, here’s the data
  1. Saban - $10.9M ($43M buyout)
  2. Smart - $10.3M ($103M buyout)
  3. Kelly - $9.8M ($79M buyout)
  4. Jimbo - $9M ($86M buyout)
  5. Kiffin - $9M
  6. Stoops - $8.6M
  7. Napier - $7.2M ($39M buyout)
  8. Freeze - $6.5M
  9. Pittman - $6M
  10. Leach - $5.5M
  11. Heupel - $5M ($26M buyout)
  12. Drinkwitz - $4M ($9M buyout)
  13. Clark Lea - $3.8M
  14. Beamer - $2.8M ($5.5M buyout)
    edited to add Hugh Freeze

Probably for the best to take a wait and see next season approach before giving him a new contract. My problem with new contracts, is the guaranteed money the university won't have if things go south. If he makes the playoffs, then he definitely deserves a new contract.

Calm down folks. Danny White is Hype’s guy and vice versa. Quit worrying about it. Hype will be taken care along with White.

If the AD was the final say on salaries…as I said…I have hope given our recent leadership changes…but past Tennessee leadership (President, Chancellor) were tight and whiny

Been saying this since we beat Bama pay this man and the staff of his choice.

I know it’s a separate discussion, but the coaching salaries are obviously out of control. The vast majority of these coaches are stealing money. Not unlike most CEOs, i guess. I do think CJH is doing a great job so far. Heupel just got a raise earlier this season (after Pitt game i think?), do they usually do multiple raises in the same yeat?

I saw where Stoops got a raise at Kentucky about a week ago to $8.5 million, Kiffin is getting boosted to $9 million. I think Heupel's body of work is sufficient to justify giving him a big raise. Maybe give him a couple million for now, and if he can replicate this season or better it, boost him up to make him the third highest paid coach in the SEC.

I don’t think it matters; at worst Heupel was the SEC 3rd best coaching job by any measure, and arguably the best.
He simply can’t be 11th in pay.

Does he? Stoops has sustained success for awhile now. And he’s at a tougher job at UK. I think CJH deserves a raise but i hope they dont go overboard until he shows he can do it for longer.
Sustained success… Stoops has a 10-3 season sandwiched between a 5-6 and 7-5 season. That’s a roller coaster, not sustained. In his BEST season at Kentucky he couldn’t beat Tennessee. He is 2-8 vs Tennessee during one of our worst stretches as a program. That’s all that needs to be said.

Coaches are getting some insane contracts and extensions even after mediocre performances. I’m specifically thinking of Stoops and Kiffin. Can’t help but look back at Mel Tucker as well as Jimbo and scratch my head. Are these teams that afraid to lose their coaches that they’ll cast aside any notion of fiscal responsibility?
Where does this leave Danny White?
Is he forced to enter the madness?

Or we could just hire Beamer away for $3 M

The first 6 are what had to be paid to keep them and/or lure them to campus. We are currently 7th in the expanded SEC in terms of recruiting rankings.
And a case can always be made that where you are recruiting today is where you will be 3 o 4 years from now.

CJH is a good guy, a super smart coach and we ( the fan base ) love him and vice versa. Don't know if you represent him, want to know where to donate money to retain him, or what, but we have recently retained both
a pretty good basketball coach and a pretty fair baseball coach when others came sniffing around. This AD seems to know what to do and how to handle these sorts of things and am sure he will handle the bump and
secure his coach at the appropriate time.

I can't help but chuckle at all the people that were constantly on here wanting us to bump Coach Fulmer's pay before someone snatched him away. Then he was let go and hired by ________. Let the AD do his job, it's kind of
what he gets paid the big bucks for. I really think we have little worry here as the current administration also understands business and the importance of having the right people leading the programs. It really is an exciting
time to be part of the Vol family.

Sure, but what Stoops and Kiffin are making is ludicrous. The only way to compete is to abandon all fiscal responsibility

He certainly deserves to be paid more than Stoops given he just whipped him. He'll get 9 million or so. I don't think we'll really need to worry about that.

Also, Florida really paid Napier 7.2 million to lose to Vandy and go 6-6? That's rough.
