Tennessee Not A Blip On The Radar

Not surprising with whats went down the last 3 years

So we have a poor season this year. Then this time next year, when we're back in the same situation recruiting-wise, everyone will say "not surprising with whats went down the last 4 years".

So we have a slightly better season in 2011 due to our coaches getting the very best out of our 3 star recruits, JUCO transfers, and diamonds in the rough. And when we're back in the same situation recruiting-wise, everyone will say "not surprising with whats went down the last 5 years."

and so on and so forth.....

It has more to do with the 3rd coach in as many seasons....kids need to see that there will be stability....I'm not talking about results on the field

Elite talent wants to play for titles and not be apart of a rebuilding process. They would rather be viewed as a potential missing part or sold as a team that will complete in the next several years for the big prize. I do not think that thiscan be sold this year especially at the skill positions. I can't stand what I just wrote, however I believe it is true with our program currently.

this staff has shown me nothing on the recruiting front, people keep saying how great they did last year and I keep telling people that Kiffin made the class because of EE's who could not transfer if they wanted to. Can't coach, can't recruit, welcome to the WAC and I am not backing off of this position so bring it on all you Dooley lovers.

Dude everyone knows your opinion. No one really cares.

The only elite talent that UTK is going to get at this point is legacies and in-state kids. How many 5* prospects for the 2011 class are high school seniors somewhere in Tennessee other than Shelby County or someone whose dad played for the Vols? That is how many 5* prospects the Vols will sign this year unless Dooley pulls another one out like D. Rogers. It's not about Dooley, it's about the state of the program and the lack of in-state talent.

************* I'm so sick of stars! I know we want the best kids we can get. Everyone knows that! But an intelligent 3 star with heart can be coached up to a four or five star level in about year and a four can be coach up in less than that! We have good coaches! Give them time! Once we show some improvement and stability in our program again....the higher caliber kids will look our way!

I guarantee our coaches have contacted these five stars, but you cant make a kid come to Tennessee. Once we build relationships (like these other schools been doing for years) and show these kids a reason to come here, they will come. I see it as a field of dreams project for Dooley....If you build it, they will come!

Yes some intelligent 3 stars can be coached up but a lot can't be. If recruiting 3 stars and coaching them up was a legit way of getting back to the top I would support it, but its been proven that this strategy doesn't work. If it did work teams like Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Arkansas would have a lot more success historically. The proven way of winning championships is to recruit 4 and 5 star players and coach them up.

We have taken such a hit over the past four years that recruiting to win championships simply isn't an option. The best we could hope for would be to take chances on higher rated players with character issues or academic question marks which is a portion of the problem that landed us where we are now.

Best to recruit players you think you can coach up who won't be distractions or fail academically. Build on those players until you can compete for the better athletes out of high school. I am not advocating for or against this scenario but it certainly appears this is the tact Dooley is taking for better or worse.

Interesting stat I picked up. Texas has 7 5* commits and are currently ranked #1 on this Scout list. 5 of those 7 are from Texas, 1 from AZ and 1 from OK. Of the 10 remaining uncommitted 5* 4 are from FL, 2 SC, 2 GA, 1 LA and 1 NC. There are some very highly ranked schools in the South going after these players. I think we would be very lucky to get 1 of these from either GA or FL. I like our chances going after the 4* and 3* and really filling in our class with immediate needs and JUCO transfers. Just my 2 cents.

I would consider, Arnett, Wright, Clear, Wright, and Johnson elite talent among others that we are in good shape for.

I think you are right. After I read all of the panic on here, I started getting worried so I went to scout.com to see the recruiting ratings. I see where we currently are at No. 25. IMO, with all of the turmoil of the last year, that is not that bad of a place to be at this point. I really would like to see us get an OL and DL-heavy class in the Top-20 by NSD (Top-15 would be gravy). That would fill out the roster and address needs for next year--and continue building a foundation to improve upon in the future.

This program wasn't destroyed in one year (it was more like 5-8), and it isn't going to be rebuilt in one season, either.
