Payton was at another level in the sixth and seventh inning last night. Holly Rowe reported something very interesting that might indicate why Payton was so focused and engaged.
Holly said, "They messed up, they messed up (meaning Alabama) was what Payton kept repeating before the sixth inning. Perhaps it was nothing more than the home run after the umpire called a ball on what appeared to be strike three. As @therealitytheory reported early that forced Payton to have to throw a pitch over the plate and the result was the homerun.
The other information Holly reported was "Karen told Payton as long as you stay under the ball (or words to that effect) they can't hit you." Payton kept repeating they can hit me. They can hit me.
Thanks to Holly we got a rare look at a Coach finding the right words for an athlete standing in the eye of the storm. Good stuff!
Let's win a championship today. I love this team.
she was in a swagger rhythm…meaning she knew she had her good stuff working and Bama had no answer. Majority of pitchers are stoic to not show emotions high or low. Some can’t hide when they are locked in, Payton was feeling it. KP was defeated and it showed on her face. Watch Jordy Bahl, she has a swagger rhythm too when she gets going. She is high-strung out there, but she’s found how to use it to her advantage.
Likely overthrows on a lot of her pitches. It looks to me like Pickens motion will make it hard to be consistent. Most pitchers that swing the arm back before starting the forward windmill - like Rogers and Gottshall - windmill the arm in line with the target. Pickens - after her backswing - starts her windmill WAY to the left of her body, like if she was going to throw the ball into the left handed batters box. Then she has to correct that arm path mid swing to get it back in line with the plate. Seems like a hard thing to repeat - especially as much arm speed as she generates. Just an observation - and probably completely wrong.
Re-watched the carnage of Picken's start. Bases loaded, 0 outs - the 3-2 pitch fooled the bammer but the ump bailed her out with the ball 4 call. Not defending Pickens - she was wild out of the gate - but that was a belt-high fastball that caught plenty of plate. Later the same thing happened leading up to bama's 2-run homer in the 5th.
This year more than any I can remember there's been glaring inconsistencies wrt the strike zone. Heh maybe we do need an R2D2 behind the plate after all.
