Tennessee Softball 2023

Kiki’s older sister played for Washington. All three will have played for different schools and the youngest that is still in high school will probably follow her own path as well. Lawyer was big on Kiki forging her own path during her recruiting process, I imagine he is telling his other daughters the same. It’s not a reflection on her experience here, certainly. There’s no better sales person for Tennessee than Kiki is.
I hear the youngest sister may be the best one! WOW! Incredible talent in that family!

no doubt!! I would not trade KIKI for any softball player in the NCAA! We will see how good she is when she goes through the SEC for a few years. I have heard the same thing,
I went to the intra-squad scrimmage today at the stadium. The coaches split the squad into three teams - the blue, the orange and the white. Some of the players played on two teams to make a full team - infielders such as Boo, Bella and Taylor Pannell. The blue team scored two runs off of Gottshall and Pickens and Ryleigh White allowed no runs against the other two teams, respectively. Charli did not pitch. Pickens was the dominant pitcher of the day. She allowed a lead-off double to Kiki but that was about it. She kept Kiki quiet the rest of the game. Pickens faced the tougher batting lineup than White and handled it well. Pannell and the Leach twins were the leading hitters. If I were Brockenbrough or Katie Taylor I would be concerned about losing my position to one of the Leach sisters. Gabby reminds me more of Aubrey with each game. Both of the twins are excellent players and it will be hard to keep them out of the lineup.

I agree. Des played a lot today but then Mackenzie didn’t play. The 3 freshman are really good! Bella was a vacuum again today at SS and the Leach twins can hit, run, and field.

I was so impressed with Bella’s fielding last weekend. She should be a day 1 starter
I think Bella will be. Like Karen Weekly recently stated, Bella is the greatest defensive shortstop the Lady Vols have ever had. That is saying a lot considering we had Madison Shipman and Megan Gregg in that position in the past.

Anyone not named Kiki shouldn’t get complacent in the OF, including West. Much needed depth and options heading into spring.

We've had the "seniority issue" with the soccer coach, and it has driven me crazy and hurt the team.
No we haven’t, we have a you don’t know who’s actually injured on the soccer team problem with your posting.

Regardless, I can’t recall in all the time I’ve been following the softball team Karen and/or Ralph playing anyone because they were a senior as opposed to the best player for the position. They have never played that game.

I didn't say they did. Someone brought up the seniority issue and I mentioned that it HAS been problem with the soccer team.
I'm aware of who's injured and that is not relevant to my comment. I could go into details but I won't on the softball thread.

Karen did the opposite in the Oklahoma game in last year's championship series: Inexplicably did not pitcher her senior All American.

Went to Saturday's scrimmage practice, this time the white team won 5-0-0 over the blue and orange teams. Karlyn Pickens pitched for the white team and looked quite good again. Payton Gottshall pitched for the blue team and did alright. She gave up no runs. Ryleigh White pitched for the orange team and got wore out by Kiki Milloy. Kiki had two home runs and a double. White pitched against a tougher lineup today and it showed. She tried her best but she puts the ball over the plate too much. Laura Mealer and Rylie West also hit well today. Bella Faw was the usual vacuum at shortstop and looked awesome. She is especially good on grounders in the left-side hole and she charges slow dribblers and throws on the run like you're supposed to. Destiny Rodriguez looked good at second base and had several hits also.
I won't be able to report on tomorrow's scrimmage game since I'm going to the volleyball match instead. They are near the same time and one has to go to volleyball matches early to get a good seat since the tickets are general admission.

Charli pitch?

For the hundredth time, Ashley wasn’t close to 100% for the Oklahoma game after going the distance in the opener. You can complain about it as many times as you want, but it wasn’t on the table for her to pitch in that game.

People act as though Ashley was a machine that could be turned off/on to pitch. I don't think people realize how much of her collegiate career was plagued with injury...so much, in fact, it inspired her research and study for her graduate program. Ashley Rogers is a Tennessee hero, in more ways than one. She will change athletic medicine one day!

Not their kid, so what does it matter. She gave herself in OK St. to get to the Oklahoma game. Ashley was running on pitching games only with her shoulder/arm discomfort-injury

You're wrong. Weekly herself said after the game that she'd made a bad decision. She was quoted as saying that after the game. There was no mention by her or anyone else of Ashley being hurt--none, zero, not before or after the Oklahoma game. It was just an inexplicably dumb decision--one of the worst coaching decisions in the history of UT sports, really. It was compounded by the fact that had Rogers been unavailable--and she was available--she could have pitched Gottshall. Instead, she pitched our no.. 3 pitcher whose innings she had steadily reduced in the previous weeks. It's over--but a crazy decision.

Payton should have pitched in that game. We all should be able to agree on that. You can tell how pissed she was sitting in that dugout

This was her quote

"I knew it was a risk," Weekly told ESPN during the broadcast. "I take full responsibility for it." Risk and mistake are not the same. Not every injury is publicly commented about and it shouldn’t be. If you watched the games you should have observed Ashley rotating her shoulder after pitches, that’s not common for someone who’s feeling good.

It was also noted during the broadcast Rogers had gone a few days without throwing, even the casual fan can read between the lines that’s she’s not 100%

No need to mention her pitches were predominantly corner fast balls and very limited spin pitches to not torque her shoulder.

Thank you so much for the recap..👍👍

Incorrect. I was there, for both the game itself and the decision making process that led to the lineup. Ashley‘s injuries meant that she typically needed 3 to 4 days of rest and recovery to be ready to go another 5 to 7 innings. We could’ve been talking about a different situation had Tennessee run ruled Alabama, rather than that game having to go to the full seven innings, but that’s not what happened.

The Karen quote that you keep leaning on as if it validates your point was when she was asked in the post game whether Ashley was healthy enough to pitch. She said she would have been available for an inning or two had the game turned out differently. And I can tell you from sitting in those meetings with the team that was the plan. Get it to late in the ball game and let her come in and finish it out. She was physically ready to do that, but not start and go 5-7 innings.

Oklahoma had struggled all season with high velocity pitching. The thought was to get a time or two through the lineup with Pickens, then turn it over to Peyton or Ashley to get the win. The other thing that did was ensure that your entire staff was available in the event you also had to play an elimination game the next day. For the record, I would still love to have seen how the first two innings had turned out if Pickens had been getting the corners of the strike zone, but she didn’t, so playing the if’s and buts game isn’t worth spending the time on.

I can appreciate your fandom, particularly your appreciation for sports that don’t get the same coverage as football or basketball. But you often speak in absolutes on what should happen or should have happened without the correct or complete information. That’s certainly your right, but you are making sweeping judgments about coaches and decisions when the information you are facing at all on is often not correct.
