Tennessee Softball 2023

I made a post in the Lady Vols volleyball forum a couple days back about an incoming freshman setter named Camdyn Stucky who is 6'3" and a lefty. She also happens to be a softball pitcher. She is from South Maize high school in Wichita, Kansas. Her father is the high school softball coach. She was honorable mention all-state class 5AA in softball as a pitcher. Eve Rackham Watt said she could be one of the best volleyball setters in the country. Imagine what she can do at the net as a 6'3" setter.
Getting back to softball, I sent an e-mail to the softball department about the possibility of Camdyn trying out for the softball team for this season since she is graduating early from high school and is coming to enroll at UTK for the Winter/Spring semester. The volleyball and softball seasons generally do not overlap. I don't see why she couldn't play both sports if the coaches could work it out. Since the Lady Vols softball did not find a fifth pitcher in the transfer portal she could be just what they are looking for. And she wouldn't have to transfer since she is right underneath their noses anyway. We'll see if anything comes of that.

It’s virtually impossible to play both sports at this level, because so much of the development occurs in the off-season. I don’t expect that to happen.

Since she will be on a volleyball scholarship, I would not expect the volleyball staff to allow that, even if there was interest. But again, 95% of the pitching development occurs from August through December, so it would be very difficult for her to progress if that was the case.

As a pitcher she wouldn't have to spend that much time with the team training. She would just have to pitch. She and Megan Rhodes Smith could work individually on that at their leisure. Like you mentioned, this would have to come at the approval of the volleyball staff. But if Karen and Megan presented their case effectively Eve could be persuaded to allow it. I doubt that Camdyn would play that much in her freshman season behind Caroline Kerr at setter anyway, so why not let her help out the softball team this season whenever possible.

Easier said than done. Unless she’s pitching right now on a constant basis she would be potentially a start from the beginning. She’s probably months removed from her last throw. And being a pitcher in college isn’t an at leisure position (non of them are).

I understand the sentiment, but it would be extremely difficult. There’s a lot more to the development than just working with the pitching coach.

At the same time, volleyball plays an entire spring exhibition season as well, and the setter is like the quarterback of the team. A lot of what they do in the spring is intrasquad, so if you only have two setters on the roster, having one of them off playing another sport puts you at a pretty big disadvantage trying to scrimmage every day.

Volleyball will have three setters in the spring. Besides Caroline and Camdyn, they also will have Lauren Woodford, a grad student transfer from Syracuse who has seen limited minutes this season when Caroline needed a talking to by Eve. I assume she will still be with the team in the spring but she could possibly say sayonara.

Thanks DeerPark 12 for the info about the volleyball spring exhibition season. Did not realize that. Sounds like they don't get much time off.

I mean there are a lot of athletes that do 2 sports. Sarah Harris did volleyball & basketball at UT Austin a couple years ago, Nebraska has a MB that does basketball and volleyball right now, & Oregon had a player back in the 2010s that did Softball, Volleyball, & Track. I think it depends on the athlete.

Those are ugly ERA’s as a team. In Kansas that’s pretty bad as it’s not a strong state for HS softball.

How can someone play volleyball and basketball when both seasons are going on right now? One could join the basketball team after the volleyball season is over, but one would miss all of preseason basketball practice plus the first month of games--meaning about two months of BB practice/playing time. One couldn't possibly maximize their BB development that way.

We had a soccer player a few years ago who was also on the track team. That was doable as the two seasons were separate--but she missed spring soccer practice every year and that definitely hurt her soccer development. You can't maximize your talent with either of two sports when you're missing off-season training/practice time for both. It's why almost nobody does it anymore.

I know that they did a feature about it and a lot of it comes down to coaches communicating with each other.
