Well, your best home run hitter and RBI producer has been out the last two weeks, so no, we are not putting the best nine out there currently.
But beyond that, it’s like some of you have forgotten what tournament play the first month of the season is all about. You’re developing what your lineup is going to be in situations against different types of pitching throughout the year. This is not a finished product, nor should anyone that’s followed the sport I have expected it to be. It’s not a settled pitching rotation. It’s not a settled lineup. It’s not that way for any team right now. Even if it is, you aren’t going to roll out the same nine players all five or six games in a three day period. That’s not responsible coaching, if you did. Look at Texas losing yesterday while experimenting some with their lineup.
It would have been nice to emerge from this weekend with wins over Oregon and UCLA, for sure. But the conference schedule provides plenty of opportunities to build a résumé, particularly with road trips to Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas. Just like every other year this decade, finish in the top half of the SEC, which we clearly have the pitching and hitting to do, and you will be a national seed and play the first weekend at home. Be slightly better than that, and you’ll be a top eight seed and play at home through the World Series. There’s way too much overacting going on here for it to be the third week of the season.
