Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

How about "his 3-point shooting regressed to the mean"? But my point still stands - I'm just not seeing what Gainey adds that we don't already have. He's another wing player that doesn't get to the rim or draw fouls.

While he won't be the focal point of opposing defenses, he's also not going to get a ton of wide open looks at this level unless he develops an ability to beat defenders off the dribble to make them think about crowding him. So I think it's likelier that his 3P% goes down from 33% than up.
I think there's still the potential to get plenty of open looks. ZZ's dribbling and the attention SV gets made JJJ/Key a bunch, they just didn't knock them down consistently. I think Gainey could definitely hit 40% on those shots.

I hate the Key comparison man. This kid is twice the athlete Key was, a better shooter, and isn’t coming off of a shoulder injury. The worst thing for Key was his Gonzaga performance.
I'd counter and say Key was a 15PPG scorer and shot over 38% from 3 in two years of ball. He's just another transfer that forgot how to score and/or shoot the ball when he got here...

When was he at 33%?

As for what he adds that we don’t have? How many 40%+ 3pt shooters on 300+ attempts do we have on the roster?
Torvik has him at 63-190 last season. Is that wrong?

If he's 40%, or even high 30's here, then I'll gladly say I was wrong. I spend most of my days being wrong, so it'll be nothing new for me.

How do you figure? The OP said these mid majors guys don’t translate, yet UCONN (the national champions) had mid major transfers, that’s all I was saying. If you want to debate that then go ahead, but that’s all I was saying.
I think Mizzou had a ton of Cleveland St. guys as well from what I recall. A lot of the skills can translate. My concern is shooters being shooters when they play here.

I don’t disagree, although Santi has been one of the greatest 3pt shooters in our program history so that makes you scratch your head a bit lol.

Sounds like he could still really excel here as a spot-up shooter. We could use one of those badly.
We could, yes, but a spot up shooter is useless if we don't have anybody that can threaten the defense. Hopefully one of the freshmen are that guy I guess,

70/203 (35%) last year, 74/150 (49%) the year before.
Ha, neither one of those matches Torvik's site - what's up with that? Wonder what BT is using to feed his stats?

My overall opinion hasn't changed - would love to be proven wrong, but I'm not seeing a major contributor here. I guess they have a lot of faith that ZZ will be ready to go and/or BJ or Freddie are ready for major PG minutes, but that's where I would have focused my portal attention, along with a stretch 4 that can complement Aidoo/Awaka.

I’m going to look at Gainey as a long term impact transfer. If he gets 10ish minutes next year (which he could unless Carr comes in and light it’s up) surely he can match Mashack’s output from this past season, which everyone should chalk up as a win. Why? Because Vescovi will prob play 30ish minutes a game.

Don’t look at him as an immediate contributor. Santi, ZZ, Dilione, and even Mashack could see the floor the most. I’d say look at like how we viewed Mashack from this past season.

If this kid can come in and average 10-11ppg his senior year, then it’s a win.

Let’s say we get Knecht and Ledlum. Good chance ZZ, Dilione, Santi, Knecht, Ledlum, Aidoo, Awaka, and maybe one more will be the rotation and eat most of the minutes

Getting better @bleedingTNorange ?

Well, I don't think we would be bringing either guy in to sit the bench. I also think both guys bring an element of something we didn't have, last year. Knecht would allow a guy like Carr to come along slowly without needing to be heavily relied upon as a freshman. Ledlum seems to be the type of undersized post that the staff is trying to make out of DJ Jefferson. Perhaps an Armani Moore type.
Do you think whoever comes will actually start at the 4? My prediction on rotation at 4 is Knecht/Ledlum - Awaka- CP. How do you think the staff is looking at the 4?

I am not sure that this thread is the right place for this question, but I will throw it out there ... since several have been throwing around Silas Demary, Jr.
Is it correct ... that Silas ... would not be a candidate for the portal ... IF USC releases him from his NLI?
Is it correct ... that any team who 'communicates' with Silas before he is granted a release from his NLI OR has the 'Removal of the recruiting ban' lifted ... would be guilty of tampering?

USC signed #1 PG Isaiah Collier and Boogie Ellis recent announcement that he is returning to USC for the upcoming season appear to put a damper on his expectation of 'immediate playing time.' (For the moment, I am ignoring the rumors of Bronny to USC. Maybe that is a real factor.) USC can take up to 30 days to respond to his request. I assume colleges are waiting for that to drop ...
By the reports I read, we finished in 3rd place in that sweepstakes the last time there was a drawing ... so your thoughts .....
Would Tennessee have SERIOUS interest in putting Silas on scholarship?
Would Silas have SERIOUS interest in signing with Tennessee?

The staff has a good sense where BJE, Dillione, and Jefferson is at. Right now, I think it's a battle between BJE and Gainey. BJE had all the opportunity to get more minutes last season and didn't budge. I think Gainey will be our Victor Bailey.

DeMary is in some tangles with USC, and staff passed in pursuing him.

Just checked Indiana’s fan forum site and one of their “insiders” said this

“I have some inside info on this particular recruit, it was discussed weeks ago in this thread. Nothing from this person makes me think things have changed. Ledlum will be a Hoosier.”

I’ll say this, if you miss on both you might as well take JJJ back and tell him he can rehab here and see what he can do 🤷🏻‍♂️
So is the current backup plan if we miss on both to have JJJ come back and JP leave and then is the roster set? I'm assuming with us approaching the portal deadline there isn't anyone else we have been in contact with.

Not sure what the plan is, I would presume it’s to not strike out on those 2.

He adds a shot-making ability. How many times have we complained over a lack of effective shooters? Gainey, even at his reduced percentage, would have comfortably been our 2nd beat 3-pt shooter, last year. I also don't see a complete absence of ability to score from inside the arc, either. He made 170 2-pt baskets in two years. Not all of those were long 2s. In his limited highlights, he shows an ability to score within 5 feet. And I think we can manufacture looks for him from deep by having guys like Dilione that can break their man down and get to the paint. I'm just not as grim on Gainey as you are. I don't expect stardom, but I feel like he offers something we lacked last year.

I think Ledlum would likely start at the 4, and potentially Knecht would in a small-ball lineup.

Ideally, you'd probably be looking at...
Zeigler
Vescovi
Mashack
Knecht/Ledlum
Aidoo

He was 70-203 according to what I've seen (34.5%).

I think Dillione will start and Z comes off the bench. I'd guess the staff is very comfortable with Freddie at the 1 given their portal (in)action at that spot, both Barnes and Z seem to like Z coming off the bench, and he may miss the start of the season anyway so they might not want to disrupt the starting lineup.
