Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

I'm not talking about game. My point was Key was a solid shooter at the mid major level, then he got here and couldn't play. Same thing with EJ Anosike.
K State was carried by a P5 transfer.
Texas was as well.
These mid major bums don't translate to this level.
Fair but there are plenty of mid major players that find success at the P5 level. I just think it’s a little unfair to judge him off of past players’ success rate. Besides them being from a mid-major conference, they share no similarities.

Go look at UCONN’s transfers, you know, the team that won the whole thing in dominating fashion.

UConn transfers aren't really as indicative of what we can expect as the actual transfers Barnes has taken. People seem offended that some of us think Gainey is a poor scholarship take. Barnes hasn't really torn it up in the portal to this point. You yourself said that your opinion changed if he was scholarship. Now we have a somewhat credible news source saying he will be. Hopefully he's wrong, but if he's not, it's disappointing.

It's not a stretch to say Barnes has struggled mightily with portal recruiting.

I'm sorry to bring positivity here but I see a baller in Gainey. We desperately need shooters and he can shoot.

Hopefully you're right, but this isn't the first time someone has hyped me on a Barnes transfer pickup.

Tyreke Key - 4 years at Indiana State, 14.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.6 apg shot 45.9% FG, 37.4% 3PT (but his % dropped drastically in the last season when he had the shoulder issues) sat a full season out then came to TN

Jordan Gainey - 2 years at USC Upstate, 14.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.6 spg, 42.6% FG, 40.8% 3PT completely healthy and was a top 15 SG ranked in the portal this off season. Better size and a better athlete than Key

He's a better addition than Key...but if I'm honest I wish he had been added last year INSTEAD of Key, adding him this off-season with ZZ's injury and no other true PG on roster is a worry that I think is valid for fans. Him being on roster this past season though could have made it harder to land Freddie and Carr.

Gained scored 24 @ Clemson and 13 @ south carolina

If he’s a bench piece/role player…I don’t see how he’s a bad addition? Especially as a 40% career 3 pt shooter

He was 18-57 vs high majors last year, 31 percent from the field. 4-`17 from 3 vs high majors, 23 percent from there. Competition matters a great deal.

How about we judge Gainey on what he actually does here and not what other players who aren't him did here before him.
We will, eventually, but right now, all we have are past results. I'll gladly eat crow later if he turns into a stud addition.

How do you figure? The OP said these mid majors guys don’t translate, yet UCONN (the national champions) had mid major transfers, that’s all I was saying. If you want to debate that then go ahead, but that’s all I was saying.

So with Gainey taking a scholarship that means, in all likelihood, JP is for sure gone and we are not getting both Ledlum and Knect? I hope Dillone is the second coming at PG next season and/or they find a way to match this season’s success or it’s gonna be a very tough look for this staff with how they’ve handled the portal.

It's the player + the coach. What mid major transfer has been successful Herr under Barnes? I remember we took a really good transfer guard named Daniel, he wasn't very good either.

You also have to factor that he will have better players around him here to practice against and play with. Plus he won't have to be the guy here and won't have the pressure to force up shots to keep his team in the game.
