When Tennessee coach Butch Jones discusses his team's need for playmakers, he isn't merely referring to running backs or wide receivers.

"When you think of playmakers, automatically our minds go to offense," Jones said. "But defensively, who is going to be able to rush and generate our pass rush when we need it?"

For the last few years, Tennessee's struggled to find anyone to fill that role.

Tennessee has posted the fewest sacks in the Southeastern Conference each of the last two years and has averaged only 17 sacks over the last three seasons. Now the Volunteers must replace all four starting defensive linemen from last year's team.

We have been poor at rushing the QB because we can't cover anyone in the defensive backfield. Therefore, the QB gets rid of the ball quickly. You'll never get many sacks if your DBs and LBs can't stay with the receivers. Just sayin..............

I will venture to say that it was the DE's making the DBs look bad because without a pass rush, the QB can sit back there and wait until a WR can eventually get open. With our putrid pass rush, no QB felt pressure enough to get rid of it quickly.

As Seattle showed in the SB this year, same with the Giants when they took down the Pats... the key to a quality back-7 is a quality front-4.

When playing the "Blame Game" it becomes a Chicken/Egg debate between the DL and the DB... Either way both lose !

Our dbs didn't have as bad year of a year as some think last year. Its popular to go against Martinez, but the dbs played the ball really well. Better than we have in a long time. And we were playing 4 walkons in 2 deep with swafford, Toney, Arnold and even juin. Nickel was tough for us and the wr screen got us too much, but the front 7 allowing rbs and qbs to do whatever they wanted started the issues.

Seattle's back 4>>>>>their front 7.

No, no, no....Seattle DB's MOUTHS >>>>>>> than the mouths of their front 7!

The front 7 won that game without doubt....they pressured Manning without mercy all game long....especially up the middle to collapse the pocket in his face.....:salute:

Seattle has the best secondary in the league, and it probably isn't close. I say that as a Niners fan.

Yes the front 7 was great.against the Broncos, but the L.O.B. is the best part of that D.

I didn't realize we've been last in sacks in the SEC for the past two seasons...two too many for TENNESSEE!

Line should be quicker and more disruptive. I worry about teams like Bama running between the tackles. DBs played better than I expected with no depth. This year I expect to see big improvements in the DBs. D should be the best we have had in 5 years. Finally getting some depth at all positions.

Agree. Think he had it backwards.

that certainly wasnt the case last year

you really think with another half second to second we all of a sudden would have gotten the sack - you saw us hurry the QB that much where if the DB's would have just held a moment longer we would have had him

b/c if so we are watching different games

vast majority of time we just werent even close
