Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

I’m curious on a few things about where all this is headed.
What does it do to a locker room? College programs already had enough problems but now adding in large amounts of cash, kids, handlers, etc.
Are the collectives and or boosters receiving in allocations of profits for contributions or just purely donating in the interest of having a winning program?
Do the kids Buck at the idea of going to school and or practice hours now?
When does a kid or group of kids try to sue when they don’t get paid as promised if not performing?
What if Nico comes in and struggles year one or doesn’t even start? Do we change his pay?

The misconception here is that large amounts of cash are just now being added. That's always been a fact of life in high level college athletics, now it's open, we gave an OL recruit 50k and he chose Georgia just a couple years ago.

There are contracts signed, as long as the player meets requirements regarding public appearances, they are good and will get their full pay. They very likely don't have performance clauses. NiL companies have to carefully select athletes, just like with any business venture risk/reward is factored into it. The closer to a "sure bet" you are, the more money you will command. It's no different than drafting someone #1 overall, you have done your homework and tried to analyze to the best of your ability, their future impact. Having a potentially great UT QB in the fold to do public appearances/advertising for your company in Tennessee, is a huge deal. Multiple local companies signed Peyton as soon as he left school. He did radio and tv commercials for years after. Nico comes here, puts up numbers like Hooker has put up, gets UT winning 10+ again, he will be the hottest thing in the state. Companies that have contributed to his NiL package will make out like bandits.

Football is more popular here in the state, it always will be. So they command higher money. Former football players are much more celebrated than former basketball players by the majority as well. If you asked people who they associated most with UT athletics over the last 30 years that weren't currently playing, among players you will hear Peyton, Jason Witten, Heath, Tee, Al Wilson, Peerless Price, Casey Clausen, John Henderson, Jennings etc etc before you hear any basketball players among the majority of fans.

The players understand that some people have more value than others. Do you think Mahomes' teammates secretly seethe behind the scenes that he's making 10x what they are? They realize that by having a great QB, they will win more and eventually that will mean more money for them. A rising tide lifts all boats and all that.

I could be wrong but from what I’ve gathered I don’t think it’s in relation specifically to 1 single player, but a new/further willingness to involve Spyre & NIL with recruits which has led to some optimism about how we could fill out this roster.
Well, since it sounds like you wouldn’t be giving anything away, any predictions on how it will be filled out?

Nice. This is what I was getting at with my earlier post about "getting the message." The way @FranklinVol16 phrased it didn't sound like a literal message from a player lol. Still, I am hopeful this means good things with Phillips. And, maybe it means we have an outside shot of landing Hunter.

Honestly no, not at this point. I feel confident we are in it fit Hunter & Phillips, could get Likekele if we wanted to and are still reaching out to some big names. I don’t know of any “locks” though.

I will say on Phillips like I posted yesterday there were some positive vibes there, which I think is likely in relation to the NIL stuff…his recruitment has had enough twists and turns though that I won’t feel good about that one until signed.

Makes sense. I guess we'll know about Phillips soon enough. He has the Ignite presentation tomorrow and then he is done. Hopefully that means a decision by Friday or Saturday.

That's why many of the legendary coaches are getting out. They know how difficult it will be to manage this new landscape as well as the HS stars who are now making a ton of money. Guys like Barnes who preach discipline and hard work will find it to be tough sledding. Barnes can resist, but he won't for long. He will either adapt or ride off into retirement. From what I've seen of the man tells me it's likely to be the latter. Men at his age don't make fundamental changes easily.

I didn’t say they were? The poster I responded too said “Malachi Smith would be a nice option if either Hunter or Phillips falls through.”.
I guess I don't understand why you'd say you could make a case for Smith>Phillips. Why? They play different positions, different types of players, and we have room for both. I guess I'm just confused why it would ever potentially come down to even having to make a choice for one over the other.

It wouldn’t necessarily, again the poster I responded to was prefacing it that way so I responded about a discussion point, goodness.

Not sure why you're getting so defensive about it. I just asked for clarification because it didn't make sense to me with how you phrased it knowing we have room to take three more guys, right now. I wasn't attempting to be confrontational about it. Sorry if it ruffled your feathers. It wasn't my goal.

I just seemed to answer your question and then you were further questioning it, I was just confused I guess, all good.

Wasn’t comparing or saying only room for 1, the OP I responded to was talking in that manner and so kind of bringing up a new topic I was just saying a case could be made that if given the choice of those 2 guys you could make a case for Smith, that was all.

Yeah, based on his orignial statement, my first thought was maybe that you meant to say Smith>Hunter instead of Phillips, so that is where the confusion originated and then it snowballed.

Yea if somehow we could land Hunter/Smith/Phillips to go along with Key already that would be other worldly imo. The talent and depth on the roster would be unbelievable and you’d also be adding 3 guys who in theory have more than 1 year of eligibility, so possibly lowers the attrition that next year.

I didn’t mean to start an argument. I wasn’t trying compare Smith to either Hunter or Phillips. I just know our top two targets at this time are Hunter and Phillips, and my point was simply that if we miss on one (or both) Smith would be a very nice consolation prize.

Now, this is a long shot to even land a single one of them, so the point is probably moot.
