This was posted today by Jamie Newberg over at Rivals who thinks TN may finish with the number 1 class.

Who is this staff putting the full-court press on? Tennessee has to finish addressing its needs across the offensive line. Offensive tackle Jawuan James is the hot name here, and Tennessee is desperately trying to play catch-up with Chaz Green. It's conceivable that the Volunteers sign as many as 14 linemen on both sides of the ball. Other big names to watch here are running backs Michael Dyer and Lache Seastrunk, wide receiver Chris Dunkley, linebackers Jeff Luc and Christian Jones and safeties Demetrius Wright and Keenan Allen.

Right now I believe Tennessee trails on most of the names mentioned above on its wish list. The point here is that these guys will be courted hard by the Tennessee staff. And if we have learned one thing in a short time with this coaching staff is that anything and anyone is possible. Did you honestly think Tennessee could land Brown, Richardson and Jackson last recruiting season?

The race for No. 1 will be as fun as ever to watch as it unfolds. Something tells me that the new regime in Knoxville will have a lot to say about the finish before it's all said and done.

It is strange for me to ask this, but does Jamie Newberg not know as much about TN football recruiting as the people around here?

Not who do you want for this list, but who do the coaches want?

I think if they had a top 10 it would include these 12 guys:

1. Jeff Luc. We need him, we will do everything in the world to get him. We would also love CJ Mosley if he does not go to Bama and Shirley (who I think we have a great shot with) and Fortt.
2. Wright. I think the staff also loves Riley. I do not think we need two safeties but I think they would take both of these guys.
3. Dyer, I think we have no shot at Seastrunk but sure we would like him and I also think the staff loves Lattimore, Gio Bernard and Mack Brown. I think we just take 1 RB.
4. Riley
5. JaWuan James
6. John Cullen
7. TJ Leifheit
8. Damien Robinson
9. James Stone
10. The surprise guys. A 4-5* decommit who they just love on film who they will try to turn from NC State or Texas A&M or wherever a bad season is had and talent is committed.

What do you guys think? I think at least half of the remaining class is OL, and I still say we can get in 9 more by losing a few current commits.

Best of my knowledge we will only be able to sign 28. I think we only have 7 spots left. As far as Newberg, I believe that his statement is very accurate.

Personally, I would like to see 4 Olinemen.

You are right about 28, but I think Broussard may not make it bc of grades or would leave if LSU offered, and Marques Pair may end up somewhere else if we get tons of OL in who he thinks would be in front of him his whole college career.

I just saw that. The headline on Rivals Football Recruiting right now is about Tennessee. That is all I need to know about the future of this program.

Someone was saying the other day that some recruits would count toward last year? Is that possible and how?

Why are so many saying Pair may change? Is there something out there floating around? Early on I thought he and his father were all UT.

I believe we can count mid term guys against last year's class, but I'm not 100% positive about that.

We can enroll as many early as we want, but we can only sign a max of 28 in each class so only 3 would be eligible to backcount.

For OL, right now we have Jose Jose, Marquis Pair, and Zach Fulton. I would love Juwann James, Morgan Moses or Leifheit and Cullen to round out the OL class. For whatever reason I'm just not that high on James Stone. I heard at the UT camp over the summer he got abused.

I am still trying to figure out why people think we have a shot at Shirley. He has never had us in the lead and rarely says anything about UT. Not visit yet, nothing. I just dont understand this.

I agree with you about Stone....seems that his stock has dropped since summer camps.

I read somewhere he was sick at our camp and the staff knew that. From all accounts he did not play well there.

I would be happy to see him stay at Vandy but sad if he went to Bama for our sake.

D Robinson, Cullen, JaWuan James could be a great final three, and I would be very happy to have Leifheit as well.

Offering first wonÂ’t guarantee that UT will receive PairÂ’s signature on National Signing Day in February.

He said heÂ’ll still consider the other schools that are recruiting him.

“I’m still going to look at them but for right now I’m going to be a Vol,” Pair said.

Offensive lineman Pair fits for now at UT GoVolsXtra

it would be extremely huge but looking at what FL and USC have lined up I just don't see us jumping them..and Texas is doing pretty flippin well too so im going to go with staying content with a top 5 class

I think our need for linemen will keep us out of the #1 spot. I think we have a great chance to finish in the top 5 though.

Only thing that matters is how they play when they get to school!!!!
#1 classes did not help in the past..........Do they have the work ethic, drive, mental toughness, and desire to be great??? That is what makes a great class.

Blah

#1 class does matter, period. If you have a top 5 class consistently you will see the results on the field. We have had some top classes but sandwiched with terrible classes. So yes getting the #1 class is important and not just on the field, recruits see that in the next class and gives the coaches even more ammo every season.

I agree, there isn't a noticeable drop in talent from the #1-#10 class, it's how you develop that talent that matters.

Texas, Southern Cal, or Florida will finish with the #1 class. Probably Southern Cal followed by Florida and Texas.

I don't think Texas will have a top 3 class. They are only taking 21 or 22. UT, UF, USC, LSU, Bama, and Oklahoma all might pass them just because they will sign 5 or 6 more recruits than the Longhorns...

It still matters what they do on the field. Look at UNC. Some great classes recently and not much better on the field. If you think that a # in front of a recruiting class is what matters....you are crazy.

I will agree on one thing....If you get 25 4/5 * guys...a few WILL pan out and make you better, but look at Boise, Utah, TCU, ect.....not great classes, but can compete with anyone. Evaluation of talent, work ethic (not all great athletes have this), and smarts make great teams!

How many of those guys from the great classes really panned out at UT. How good was Riggs (1 good yr) Bolden (no good yrs)........If they don't pan out....why would a 5* want to come in the future.? Coach the players into winners!

plus you have to be able to keep those players around/get them on campus, look at our '07 class: paige, melancon, creer all helped get us that high ranking but 2 years later none are still on the team
