Tennessee's recruiting class may end up #1 (merged)

Our staff is being careful to bring in guys who will qualify academically and who character wise should stay out of jail.

I am very excited about our future!

I would love to see oour class in the top five this year, just to show everyone out there that UT football is really back on the map. But other than that reason, what our class rank is has no correlation to how we play, it all depends on how hard those players are willing to work.

Exactly.....people get too caught up with rankings and *'s. I know that the better players you have the better chance you have of being successful. But that is not the main thing.

I agree.. on the flipside.. Kiffin will bring in the players who want to win.. that's the type of atmosphere that is being built right now. Players who want to win at everything.. If you're not a competitor at everything you do and winning is not at the top of your priority list, then you won't be wearing a Tennesssee uniform.. You'll see it completely playoff in 2011.. guaranteed

I agree that being in the top 5 is important for long term on the field success. Getting the talent to UT is very important, and we are seeing the sequela of poor recruiting on the field now. As much as I love Nick Reveiz, he runs a 5.2 and he is a walk on - I love his heart and I love the way he plays. Sullin brothers are two other guys that have heart and determination but there is a talent gap...we saw that last Saturday. We will see the talent gap in a big way on Saturday, too.

Talent is but 1/2 of the equation. What separates LSU/UGA from a UF/USC squad. COACHING. I would argue that LSU and UGA should have the same amount of raw talent that UF and USC have. They have consistently finished in the top 5/10 every year in recruiting, but they have very different W/L when compared to UF/USC.

Who are the better coaches? Would you take Les Miles or Urban Meyer as the leader of your program? How about Mark Richt versus Pete Carroll. I think the answers speak for themselves. You have got to SQUEEEEEEEZE every ounce of talent juice from your recruits once they get to campus. You squeeze through discipline, motivation, focus, hard work, etc etc etc.

Yes, we want the talent, but even just as important we have the staff that can squeeze the juices out of our Big Orange Recruits.

Max is 30 this year. You keep forgetting that you can sign 28. Backcounts are NOT included into that 28. 28 + 2 backcounts = 30...

With this news, I would have to think signing a couple of more players vs what we thought previously would put us in a position to go higher in the rankings?

I know it would be awesome to win that #1 class thing, but a crazy thing like us getting a couple more SEC caliber players might happen too. How cool would that be?

I am definitely with you on this. The main thing is to get as many quality players as possible. If you happen to finish #1 in the recruiting poll, then that is just a bonus.

Personally, I do not think that there is necessarily much difference between the #1 class vs the #5 class in most years. The rankings after all are subjective and miss occasionally. In the end, I would take the #3 class and a group of coaches who can develop them vs the #1 class and a staff that fails to develop.

You are forgetting all the pub and the accolades that come with landing the #1 class. Next year's recruits are watching those standings carefully and it is a big deal to come in a year after landing such a great recruiting class. They are just numbers, sure. But they are numbers that help in many different areas relating to recruiting.

Max 27 this year. Only room for 2 backcounts.

As I said previously, we can enroll as many early as we want. It looks like only 2 would count towards last year's class, but you get the benefit of having the guys on campus through the spring and getting a jump on learning the system and participating in the S&C program.

We can only sign 28 players besides the 2 that backcount, but only 25 can enroll in the fall, just like any other recruiting year. So if you think you have 3 guys that may not qualify or a guy or two that would be willing to grayshirt, you sign as many as they will let you.

A grayshirt is where a guy doesn't enroll until the second semester, thereby saving his eligibility so that he still has full eligibility the next year. He would be eligible to participate in Spring activities and would be considered a true freshman in the fall. They would count towards next year's recruiting numbers.

Bama grayshirted some players last year I think.

I agree with you that it brings a lot of good with it.

I am not sure that we can quite get there this season because of our need of lineman. Not to mention that despite landing arguably the best kicker in several years, we will not get more than a 3* ranking for him.

I believe the youngest Colquitt was a grayshirt...correct?

I agree. I would take this class over any other that ends up in the top 10. It's filled with "our guys" -- guys the coaches love that fit our system. I'm not worried about whether or not we finish 1st in the rankings, but I think to say that the rankings are meaningless and they don't affect anything is ridiculous. And this is directed toward the person you were replying to -- not you.

Some people love to pop in here and ridicule those that follow recruiting and look at the rankings, discounting completely the notion that they have an effect on not only the current class, but future ones as well.

I'm not gonna lie. I thought this staff would flop, and I thought sooner rather then later. But I was wrong. This staff is gonna bring back UT. These guys are gonna recruit UT back into the top 10 in no time.

What they did last year close to signing day, is nothing short of amazing...

Wow you just admitted, that you thought Orgeron, Gran, M. Kiffin, Chaney, Wilson would fail. I could see you second guessing Lane, and Reeves, but with all the PROVEN assistants around them it would be hard to fathom them
"flopping" just mho GO BIG ORANGE, and BIG ORGERON!!!

Someone give Hamilton his due on that.
He made a budget where assistants could get 3 million so we could have the best recruiting staff in the nation.

JC. Copeland today in a Scout article:
"I have become friends with the quarterback [Tyler Bray] from California. I have talked to him a couple of times. The coaches told me they are going to have the No. 1 class in the nation."

Kiffin said it on Gameday.

It has been poo pooed numerous times on here from posters who say Lane did not really mean it that we would have the top class, and now there are some who believe UF will have the number 1 class.

Here is the bottom line, we have the best recruiting staff in the nation. We will sign a very large class and we will promise and deliver early playing time. We finish up with all 4 and 5 star guys.

We are in it with lots of guys, but if I know their name and you do as well, they are not Janzen Jackson, or Bryce Brown or Nu'Keese Richardson. The coaches have some tricks up their sleeves.

I am thrilled to get some group of Cullen, D Robinson, TJ Leifheit, JaWuan James, Morgan Moses and J Stone on the OL.

I am also thrilled to get some superstar LB talent. Luc is who I want most, but I love Irvin already and I would not be surprised at all with this staff if we had a Fortt or a surprise like a CJ Mosley pull.

Get excited and sit back and watch more good news coming in. Urban cannot offer an offensive system that sends guys to the pros as much, and Urban and Saban cannot deliver as much early PT at key positions. We also can take the max allowable because we have had so many defections and fitting them to 85 will be easy for us. It is not as easy when you have had consecutive top 5 classes for 3-4 years.

true, i just feel kind of scared about the QB situation. bray is a project and is not going to be ready as a true freshman and stevens is crompton jr. but it sounds like we are going to get some great OL and DL. hopefully we can grab a couple more LBs and maybe a couple more playmakers.
