Tennis Vols back in NCAAs

I noticed today that 2 sophomores from the TN finished 1-2 in the Boys 18 National Open that finished on the 4th. One of them (from Knoxville) drilled the #1 seed, Hunter Reese (UT signee), along the way. Pretty much means that TN has 3 of the top 5 or 10 players in the country for class of 2013. The other kid (of the three in that class), was playing internationally, and did not play. The other signee for TN, Fickey, did not do so hot in the tourney in singles.

Both UT signees met in the Doubles finals.

TN probably has a legit shot at two of those kids. The other will either go pro or maybe to Vandy where his brother played. Getting at least 2 of those kids would set TN up nicely to be in position to continue a run at the NCAA title.

That's awesome! I guess when you factor in all the rich suburbs that TN has, it makes sense that we tend to always have above average tennis talent. Glad to hear things are looking up!

just so i'm straight, Hunter Reese and Fickey are both UT commits? When will they enroll? And then Wood, Karl, and the kid that was playing internationally are currently rising juniors in HS? And we are just hoping that they come to UT given that they are in-state?

Sorry I am just getting back to this...

Reese enrolled this past Jan, but just worked out with the team and continued to play Jr tournaments. Fickey will join the team in the Fall.

Wood is from Knoxville (Catholic HS), Karl is from Brentwood (Ravenwood), and Maxx Lipman (Brentwood High - #1 in the country) are the class of '13.

Lipman's brother went plays at Vandy, so that may be a tough pull. I think the mom played there as well.

I would assume that Wood is TN's to lose being a local kid, but you never know.

I have no idea about Karl. He is a kid they need to land being that he is a top shelf instate kid.

There is a 4th kid, Marshall Sharp (Memphis - MUS), who is a 5* (the rest are considered Blue Chips). He should be a kid that can pretty much name where he wants to go as well. IMO, he is a kid that will benefit from a college program. Already 6'4 but moves very well. If TN wanted him, he may be a tough pull.... I heard he may have his sights on Virginia or some other more academic type schools.

There are some other solid prospects in that division. Probably going to be one of the best classes the state has put out, at least is some time.
