Thank God we dodged that bullet!

I keep seeing this repeated but what is it based on? Would recruits throw their panties at Gruden simply by virtue of him being a "Rock Star"? If youre an elite recruit whos had Les Miles, Saban and Spurrier talk to you in your living room, are you really going to be blown away by the mere presence Gruden?

The graduation rates among all football players is sad enough, but If you look at the graduation rates among 4-5 star recruits only, it is abismal. It is completely obvious that those guys see college nothing but an audition for the NFL. There's no doubt in my mind that JG and his assembly of NFL experienced people would be VERY appealing to those guys.

Of course, eventually he'd have to put up or shut up, but he'd kill it the first few years.

I'm still sticking with C Strong or J Fisher as the best candidates. I think patrino will go to Auburn, just to be close to the pool of talent from FL and GA.

My argument for strong/fisher...both of them can recruit that FL speed talent... and i mean straight steal them from under muschamp and i think that can come quickly just with recognition

Truth is...we have been suffering an epic poop storm for the last 5 years and been on the decline prior to that. UT fans are not just folks who like to wear orange and cheer on our team...we are so emotionally connected to rocky top that it hurts our pride when we are not revered as a top tier program or as a great place to coach. Kiffin really screwed with our hearts when he left. It blew our minds that he could actually want to work somewhere besides Tennessee. And...it seemingly did not take him more than 20 seconds to decide and he was out of town (laughing all the way). It's why, to this day, a USC loss is a UT win in most of our books. It sucks to feel like Tennessee is no longer a great place to play/coach. I sat next to Manning in a Psych class...I was in school when Tee took us to our National Title. I remember what it felt like to be GREAT! Gruden felt good to dream about because us landing a "rock star" coach would be an exciting story and an immediate draw to the University and would instantly bring Tennessee back to life. But...would it last??? Would he win??? Sure, he would immediately draw in recruits. But, if he had a lack luster first season or was difficult to wrangle emotionally....would he be able to draw the recruits in again??? If not, all we have is a program that had 15 minutes of fame and a whole lot of checks to pay with nothing to show for it in the "w" category. IMO, you are right...we dodged a bullet. (end of sermon)

That may be enough to turn a recruits head in the Pac 12.
But in the SEC there are 5 Head coaches who have NFL coaching experience, 2 of whom were head coaches in the NFL.

I just dont see him out-recruiting the big boys of the SEC just because he has "NFL" on his resume.

Seriously, gruden?! Decent analyst not so great coach. We deserve better than just name recognition... Charlie Strong, Jimbo Fisher or if we did want to go after a NFL coach, Bill Cowher (not likely) but let's reach for the stars. But seriously i can't believe how people were going bananas over gruden. Dude is a joke.

You have lost your mind. the staff he has pit together will be dominant by year 2.

He would have been a rockstar!!!

Great Recruiter

But most Rockstar are HARD to deal with!! Huge Egos and do not "play" well with others. He would have increased the talent on this team but do not know if he would have won championships. I think he would have been fired like coach majors at some point in the future because his ego would have worn thin after a while.
