We are soft . Mentally stunted and filled with emotional insecurities . There’s a reason why my grandfathers generation was called the greatest generation . I just got though watching documentaries on WW2 and if those 17, 18,19 , 20 year old kids were as soft as we are today ... we’d all be speaking German and still giving the one arm salute to the concurring German .
Here, here. My grandfather wasn't a Combat Veteran, but he was out there in the Pacific as a Seabee engineer (Capt'n). Followed by a second career as a TVA Eng. He was a tough old bird. And shot as straight as the suns rays. As stand up as a man can be. Active in East TN outdoors and conservation. Tennessee Conservation League. Full page almost in the KNS when he died. And there were many like him of his generation. Man at church growing up was in a tank in Europe. couldn't go to firework shows and stuff. Lifelong shell shock afterwards. Saw him dive under a table when a fire cracker went off. I tip my hat to anyone that ever served in combat, or close to it in support, whether drafted or freely. Takes a different kind of person to say they'll do that for others.
My Pappaw and my dad both passed in the last 18 months. Both 26 years USAF.
My Pappaw also came back and worked for TVA for over 20 years and got a full retirement. Then volunteered for Remote Area Medical til the day he died pretty much. When he got to where he couldnt pile in the plane and fly off to south america or south Dakota with RAM anymore because of his health, he still drove down to the old school off Henley st sorta where their "headquarters" is, and cut all the grass, took care of the dog, and did whatever he could for anyone who needed help.
Far and away the greatest man I ever knew...i will never be half the man he is. Thank God, he was always proud of me anyway, and loved me just the same. God rest his soul
