The really amazing part is that in the Emancipation Proclamation rather than ending slavery in all the United States Lincoln wrote:

In hindsight it probably wasn’t a bad idea. Trying to get a people to assimilate who were kidnapped and sold into slavery was a difficult it not impossible task. We are still dealing with the fall out.
