That's racist!

This speaks volumes to who wants division...

Harvard undergraduates get:

..."70 percent of our students receive some form of aid, and about 60 percent receive need–based scholarships and pay an average of $12,000 per year. Twenty percent of parents pay nothing."...

So you would think that because of the scholarship and cost of attendance help
they would feel acceptance and an appreciation for having a degree from the most prestigious university in America. You would think they would want to participate. I don't see how this can be justified.

Harvard should let em do it. But their sheepskins will only be available at and during the regular graduation ceremony. After that they'll have to get a box of crayons and butcher paper and make their own if they want one.

Folk screaming you're racist! You bad bad person.

Then they go and PROVE themselves to be more racist than those they accuse of racism.

The $#1t is gonna hit the fan in the not too distant future and this country is going to pull apart at the seams.

Slavery and racism aren't the same thing. Slavery is just a symptom of underlying racism

No ****! I think most get that...

There is no underlying racism keeping these kids from getting the best education in America...they're piggybacking on the shoulders of historical struggles of racism....

That is racist, yes. I have no problem saying that. The problem is when people then start saying, "I got called a cracker the other day...so that puts me in the same position as all these people of color who are 'complaining,' and allows me to invalidate what they're saying."

what if I didn't get a job because I was the wrong skin color? white?

I am also not trying to invalidate if something is or is not racism. But what impact that it actually has. I didn't let the lack of job or racist terms impact me; others do. the problem with racism is that it has become a crutch for many that leaves them with a permanent limp.

how much of the injustice received is self inflicted? how many communities have been burnt down by their own riots? How many kids have been pushed away from school and honest work by the community and culture they idolize. How many turn to drugs and see nothing beyond their next high/drunk. I am sure you can say its all they know, but that ignores the ability of those people to improve themselves and dismisses the so called "success stories".

the issue with racism is that it has become the first card played and often the only card played instead of looking objectively at a situation.

It's not the tune of slavery, it's the tune of racism, which you and I both know didn't expire in 1865.

The theme seems to be holding on to past...

Student organizers said the event, called Black Commencement 2017, is the first universitywide ceremony for black students at Harvard and is designed to celebrate their unique struggles and achievements at an elite institution that has been grappling with its historic ties to slavery.

Last year, Drew Faust, university president, and Representative John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat who is a civil rights icon, unveiled a plaque commemorating four slaves who had been owned by Harvard presidents. The university also agreed to redesign the Harvard Law School shield, which was modeled on the family crest of an 18th-century slaveholder.

Woods said the black graduation ceremony will recognize that history, as well as the challenges that black students face today

If we want to "solve" the race problem, we first have to address it. Part of addressing it is examining the whitewashed version of history that we teach. I don't think that aspect of it should really offend anyone.

The biggest part is people first owning their own ****ing problems and stop blaming everyone else for their own terrible decisions.

There's no objective way to determine what the "biggest part" is, but why does it need to be the biggest part before we acknowledge it?

lol what about history would you like changed?

And for the record: Afrocentrism is a horribly inaccurate and racist ideology

...aaaaand that's why racism will never die.

The problem is when race is addressed, you know, like everyone says how they "want to talk about it"..when it is "talked" about, reality kicks in and a lot of people who want to examine a "whitewashed history" have a hard time coming to terms with reality. They often find it difficult to separate fact from fantasy thus they get excited and start calling people "ignint", and start howling about racism that, racist this, White supremacy, whitewashed history, etc, etc, etc.

Whitewashing of history is an issue if you never made it past middle school. If you did, maybe you should have paid more attention in your history classes.

Exactly.

Like I said in my post it sounds like someone might only remember elementary school history where Pilgrims and Indians got together and made popcorn and sang Christmas hymns to Odin.

I didn't see Nash espousing Afrocentrism.
The separatism, having to have a 'separate' commencement is going back to the days of "separate but equal" segregation. Will we have segregated "safe spaces" now?

While it is going back to segregation, people on the left don't see it as a bad thing since the evil White devil isn't the one forcing them to do it. By them doing it on their own accord it becomes empowering..or something similarly as stupid.

This is a professional evaluation of the situation... it's like you're a doctor or something

The hell are you talking about? History doesn't change, what happened happened. The version that we teach is the version told by the majority, which is why we focus on what Washington did in battle and never talk about how he treated his slaves. It's why we have Confederate memorials all over the South and zero memorials to lynching victims. History is always written by the people in power; I don't think there's anything controversial about saying that ours is the same way.

Racism will never die mostly because it's pretty difficult to completely eliminate bias. As for the rest, you're accusing other people of pointing fingers by pointing fingers yourself.
