That's racist!

The hell are you talking about? History doesn't change, what happened happened. The version that we teach is the version told by the majority, which is why we focus on what Washington did in battle and never talk about how he treated his slaves. It's why we have Confederate memorials all over the South and zero memorials to lynching victims. History is always written by the people in power; I don't think there's anything controversial about saying that ours is the same way.

I agree with you that history is written by the victors...

True history isn't taught, because it would cast a bad light on the majority of the winners, or people in power...present day indoctrination is little different...it tells a biased story that demonizes anyone who questions and puts the winners in a favorable light...

I hope most people have awoken to such...

I can understand that sentiment, but I think the majority of people aren't as extreme as the other side thinks. That goes for both sides, really; most of the stories we read are about the biggest outliers

I don't disagree. I'm saying it sounds like you'd like something about that to be changed. What is it you seek?

That's why I brought up Afrocentrism. Most people who complain about that are supporters of Afrocentrism. Which is a horrible inaccurate and racist ideology

Some of it has to be age specific too. For younger children, they should be taught basic things. As they get older, teach them that our founders weren't perfect.

Which I would argue is being done for the most part

is the opposite true though? We don't talk about all the Confederate Generals who treated their slaves well. Honestly I don't know if there were any. But that side of history isn't being taught either. You don't hear about the white people who faced oppression in the south either. Those that freed/helped slaves or freed men. Those of a different faiths etc.

the whitewashing of history ignores a whole lot of good as well as the bad. we tend to think the Civil War was pretty black and white according to history (pun intended) when it was anything but.

again it doesn't have to be racism that covers up some of these things. some things are sadly not relevant to 8th grade American History. Grant was drunk wife beater but frankly that's kinda irrelevant to the story.

The one and only Stephen A was just on ESPN informing us that the MLB is racist, just in case anybody didn't realize it.

Nah, I'm not advocating any specific curriculum.

I'm saying that any story we tell about the past will be biased in some way, and since those stories are told in the present, those biases will have some present impact. So when people point some of them out, I disagree with the dismissal of their concerns as irrelevant because "it's the past," and with the notion that our currently-used version of history is perfectly unbiased and objective.

For me it's not about whether we change anything, but whether we acknowledge and understand the biases inherent in whatever version of history we use.

Probably should bring that up at the next DNC.

Out of curiosity..did you stop taking history classes in middle school?

Alternatively, I'm also saying that if the bias were presently damaging enough (like, say, if German kids were currently being taught that Nazis were heroes and Jews were at fault, or the Holocaust didn't happen) we wouldn't accuse the offended party of "whining" or "howling" or "being stuck in the past." The reason people see this as different isn't because of the past, but because people see this bias as less damaging or less important. And I'm not saying that's incorrect, just showing that you can't always automatically reject anything involving "the past."

I just read the title of the thread and think what I did today that was racist.

1. Purchased items with my own money
2. Swam in pool/drank scotch

What kind of Scotch Whiskey? Why not Irish whiskey like Jameson? If you aren't Scottish you could be guilty of cultural appropriation. And that is wrong.
