The All Things Cycling Thread

Finished 2015 with 5,584 miles.

I would like to have done 6,000, but February (145) was a deficit from which I never recovered.

It's so nice today I skipped the first half of the day to ride. 5° Saturday and -21° prediction for Sunday so...

I've been biking for a while just on basic road bike. My biggest question is would it be worth it buy an expensive light-weight bike? How much faster can you go on a bike that's four or five pound lighter?

Really depends on how much you ride. When you upgrade yorlur bike you aren't really just getting a lighter bike. Weight reduction comes with higher quality components and frame.

An upgrade in components and frame will mean the bike rides smoother, usually. It is also more responsive in handling, acceleration, and shifting. The components become more reliable and you'll gain a bit in shifting capability as the number of gears increases.

Lighterweight wheels means you'll be able to climb faster, too. The bearings will roll smoother and wheel build stiffer, for improved acceleration.

Comfort also plays a part in an upgraded bike, but only if it fits you properly.

Thanks for the info. I ride about 40-50 miles a week, at least when I'm not on "winter" (or at least what passes for it in Chattanooga) break. For now, I think I'll just stick with what I have, even though shifter is starting rust/hang.

No cycling activities today.

Apart from the weather my joints have been acting up more this month, which is a problem. I'm not sure I'll get a ride in this week.

Rode in fresh powder this morning. Less than an inch, probably close to 1/2". Always fun. No problems with traction.
