The Association Football Thread

Ya, you are exactly the kind of personality that ruins the spirit of intramurals. Way to go, champ. You've really put me in my place.

I never was a trash talker or ever had an issue w any other team frat or otherwise.

I also don't have an issue w u. You called me a douche frat guy because i said i enjoyed ut intramurals. I was never in a frat.

It's not my fault you are a wuss, that can't take competition.

I was glad to see espn televising the english premier soccer league, even if my Blues team stinks, certainly a fond memory of my childhood.

lol

How has Altidore been doing lately?

Not very good to be honest. I think he has scored 1 goal all year and hasn't even started half of their league games. Hull City is being relegated so that should tell you just how concerning it is that he hasn't really been used as a premier player.

Well, it's kind of nice to not have boundless optimism going into a world cup for a change. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised instead of mercilessly disappointed.

We were probably too optimistic last time, but we can make a decent run if we play aggressively.

Not really excited about our list of forwards, though.

Obviously not making the knockout stages is a disappointment. We can win either 1 or 2 after, but we'd have to play very well and likely hope our opponents aren't quite on their game.

Alright guys I'm finally breaking down and going to try and start liking futbal. I'm going to watch the Fifa World Cup next month and start supporting a club. What club should I take up supporting since I'm new to the world of soccer?

For some reason, lots of Americans refuse to appreciate the MLS. I enjoy it and it's a lot easier to keep up with than any of the leagues overseas.
My team is the Columbus Crew, because I grew up playing AYSO and then traveling soccer with a kid who is now the Crew's starting GK.

That's kind of hard to answer. Do you want to support a European team? English? Spanish? Italian?

If you want to watch beautiful football, I would suggest Arsenal or Barcelona. Two teams that have built great teams through their youth system primarily.

Ugh, I can't watch MLS, except for the Sounders.

What about the Sounders is more watchable than the rest of the league? You watch soccer for the uniforms you like, don't you?

Lol, no. IDK, just like the Sounders tradition and fanbase and all.

I hate to pile on you here, but if you're going to dog on the MLS please at least know what you're talking about.
The Sounders are an expansion team that is two years old. Gotta love that tradition.
It's okay, I get it. Their sponsor is XBox. Just admit it. That's why you like them. Either that or you're a big Price is Right fan.

The MLS team is just a continuation of the USL and NASL franchises in my eyes.

It'd be like if there was a new New York team who was named the Cosmos. I'd think of them as a continuation of the NASL team, even if it really wasn't.

So I got into a debate with someone that the European Cup is more difficult to win than the World Cup. I think that's crap, seeing as South America owns half of the World Cup titles, and Europe hasn't recorded back to back titles since 1934/1938. Anyone disagree?

Considering only a fraction of teams even qualify to get to the world cup level, I'd say it is much, much harder to win the world cup. Not to mention you have no way of improving your roster except to "grow" more players.

World Cup you play teams with totally different styles of play. Much harder and even without that, Panthro said it, no contest. Numero Uno, Nummer Eins, Top dog.
