The Association Football Thread

wasn't expecting barca to get beat like that (4x0 PSG)

and dortmund lost 1x0 to benfica. had some big opportunities missed it looks like (including a pk miss by aubameyang)

I saw the book thread in the pub bumped so I remembered to ask: has anybody read "Soccernomics" (similar to freakonomics and freedomnomics but obviously for soccer). I finished it last week and really enjoy it.

Looks at the statistics/economics of soccer worldwide. Anything with sports/money/stats/etc I'm generally a fan of. in the book they mention "field of schemes", so I bought that on amazon for a few bucks and I'm waiting for it to arrive

I will be in Germany next week on business. About an hour and a half from north of Munich. I already bought two tickets for the Bayern vs Schalke Pokal match. Only been in the new stadium once way back. So looking forward to it. Going to go to the game with the fan club from the town I used to live in. Going to be a slow Thursday work day.

You fluent in German? And how long were you there

(I didn't post last week after arsenal got destroyed by bayern. Was embarrassing)

Mother is German and dad was in the army. Wife is also Germany. Last time I lived there was for about 8 years ending in 2001. Was a great time to be there.

Awesome, I'd love to go someday

This man city/Monaco game is exciting. Monaco misses pk (saved), agüero scores a few mins later. Then Falcão scores just after

Still have half an hour to go! 3x2 Mónaco

Wow, another goal for city. 3 all (Just minutes after they get mad about not having a penalty awarded)

Ranieri fired. This has to be a new low for firing coaches, even by European soccer standards doesn't it?

This is like a coach taking over the Browns, winning a Super Bowl in his second season, then firing him midway through his third season when they suck again. Insane

Except if the Browns went back to sucking, they would not only remain in the NFL, but would get the best draft picks to improve themselves in the future. If Leicester were to get relegated this season, losing that EPL TV money could lead to a catastrophic chain of events where they couldn't afford to keep paying the wages owed to many of their players, be forced sell them off, and leave the club in a situation that might take years and years to recover from, if they ever managed to at all. What Ranieri was doing this season just flat out wasn't working, and they had to do something to try and right the ship before it's too late. European soccer doesn't reward failure in the same way American sports do, so all the teams and managers walking the relegation tightrope can't be afforded a very short leash.

I understand the much higher-risk nature of having a bad season than American sports, but what can change that much in three-quarters of a season? They even were able to keep a lot of the same players they had last year, which most teams in their position would not have.

Is a new coach really better equipped to get them away from the relegation zone than the coach they won the EPL with just last season? Did the rest of the league wake up overnight and figure out how to beat them? If it was just that easy, why couldn't they do that during the season last year?

It's just crazy how fast a lot of these teams go through coaches. Admittedly I don't understand soccer as well as other sports so perhaps there is something I'm missing relative to how a coaching change can spark a team.

If pretty much the entire locker room had turned on him, as is being widely reported, then that answers both of your questions in bold. They have been in a death spiral ever since Christmas, and the relegation margins are often razor thin. Even a 2-3 point uptick in form might keep them up. A couple of teams just below them have shown signs of life over the past month, so to me, Leicester just couldn't risk continuing down the road they were on, regardless of how cutthroat the decision might seem on the surface.

LC won the EPL without having to deal with European play. Maybe adding in the Champion League exposed some coaching deficiencies along with depth issues? It is surprising though in light of the fact that, assuming no relegation, they will not be playing in Europe next season.
