The Atlanta Braves (thread 1)

At least you didn't have to watch Melky Cabrerra make the worst throw in baseball history.

I was cooking up some ribs for a friend's birthday and missed the play, but I finally saw the replay. Yeech, as they used to say in Mad Magazine. At least it didn't affect the outcome of the game since it was the 5th of the 5 runs.

I'd be delighted with the Ankiel trade if it would just get Melky out of my life -- excpet that Ankiel looks worse against LH pitching that Cabrera does in CF. So no happiness one way or the other.

I don't think Wren wanted to trade away the future for 1 year (schuerholz). I would love for Cox to go out with a WS title but our team will be much better in 2 years by holding on to our prospects.

Schuerholz made the Teixeira trade when the Braves were something like six or seven games back, which is way different than when you're actually leading at the deadline. Schuerholz gave up the store on a longshot. This is a team which is right in the mix. This is when you burn prospects for players who can help you right now. Trade Teheran. Trade Minor. Take your shot. Remember how Tommy Hanson was the most can't-miss of all can't-miss prospects? Think about where his ceiling is now compared to where it was two years ago. He's going to be a good ML pitcher, but he's clearly not going to be the ace that we all thought he could be. There's No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect. Trade them all and get us a freaking outfielder who can hit.

Wren blew this trade deadline badly.

Honestly this team is probably a longshot to win the WS even if they added an extra bat. This team has been smoke and mirrors for the most part.

Any team that's trying to do business with a $100m payroll is a longshot to win the WS. You take your shot when you get the chance.

another problem was that there wasn't any big bats out there on the market. BTW how long will Liberty Media be owners?

Willingham isn't exactly a "big bat," but he would have made a difference in the Braves' lineup. Even Cody Ross could have played every day. The modern, post-Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz Braves aren't going to come into the trade deadline up 3 or 4 games very often; they need to go down with guns blazing when they do. TRADE YOUR DAMN PROSPECTS FOR PLAYERS, Frank. That's what they're there for when you're winning.

Liberty had to hold onto the team for X number of years in order to reap the tax benefits of having acquired them in the first place, but I don't know that anybody ever said what X was. Let's hope it comes up soon. We desperately need Arthur Blank to buy the team.

One byproduct of this deal is that I think it sets up the probability of a major deal in the offseason for a big bat; especially if Chipper retires as expected.

I'd agree with you except the selection of right handed power just wasn't that great this year.

I was just holding my breath with 5 minutes to go when rumors about Chone Figgins started popping up.

This afternoons lineup:

1. Conrad 3B
2. Heyward RF
3. Infante 2B
4. McCann C
5. Hinske 1B
6. Gonzalez SS
7. Ankiel CF
8. Cabrera LF
9. Hanson

I would have rather seen:

Glaus needs to break out of his funk and Hanson needs to be great today... Big series starting with the mets tomorrow, we need a road win.

I don't have anything to base this from, but I still think that Hanson will be a number one or two starter in the bigs.

Is there any reason Bobby does not play Infante everyday at SS? I know you have Gonzalez but Infante would be perfect in that 2 hole. You're going to need Glaus in the playoffs and if you were to move Heyward to 6th behind Troy he would probably get alot of good pitches to hit.

Is this completely out of the question? I don't really follow the Braves in the paper and stuff like most of you guys probably do.

Omar Infante is forcing Bobby to give him more starts...
