The Atlanta Braves (thread 1)

From my perspective, the moral failing is that guys who are paid millions of dollars don't KNOW HOW to bunt - blame them for not learning, and blame the coaches for not forcing them to learn. If they did know how, they wouldn't stab at the ball...and their numbers would go up big time.

Greg Maddux ain't the only guy who can handle the bat either - I think you miss a lot of good bunting b/c you're busy vomiting in your mouth when you see a player square around.

I don't disagree that all the poor bunting technique is inexcusable, but I don't think it matters from a managerial standpoint -- whether it ought to be an automatic thing or not, it isn't. You have to assume a relatively high chance of failure when you call for it.

And the main thing that stuck out with me about Maddux is that he is he only player I've ever seen that unapologetically squared around so early. It can't be a coincidence that he was so successful at it. I think bunting at major league pitches is a lot harder than even major leaguers think it is.

Guys on MLB network said Hudson, Hanson, and Jurrjens will be the starters in the playoffs and Lowe will be in the bullpen

I can see him being the 4th starter if we make it to the championship series. But other then that its going to be 1. Hudson, 2. Hanson, 3. Jurrjens

Just looked at the stats. In 3 starts he is 0-1 with a 2.79 ERA. His luck hasn't changed.

That guy is freaking snakebit. The Braves need to just eat some of his salary and trade him somewhere this offseason; he could help plenty of teams out as a 5th starter. And the emergence of Minor makes it seem unlikely that he'll ever pitch in Atlanta again.

That's the thing about small ball fetishists -- they ignore the fact that sacrifices only work about what, 75 percent of the time? A quarter of the time you just give up the out for nothing. And then instead of acknowledging that the failure rate should be part of the calculus in whether to make the move or not, they just act like it's a moral failing on the part of the batter. It's laughable.

And even if the bunt had worked, then you've taken away any chance that Prado -- whom everybody in this forum thinks is the Braves' best hitter -- could plate the runs himself. Prado hits a ton of doubles; Heyward had good speed at first. The Braves' best chance to score in that inning was to let Prado swing away and try to drive in the runs himself. Why would anybody think that it would be smart to hand the job over to Mat Diaz?

Now that right there is a lie. Dude's gap power is waiter worthy...

Are you trying to make a serious argument? If so, it's absurd.

You've been insisting that Prado is a "great" player. You've been comparing him to all these other table-setter types, and crowing about their MVPs, and scoffing at me for comparing them to waiters. Yet it's ludicrous to think about trading him for a real championship-caliber player like Votto, isn't it?

Prado's an excellent player, but there's a limit to how valuable players like him can be. You can't win a title without somebody of Votto's type in the lineup. And there are a lot more players of Prado's type than there are of Votto's.

Anyone watching? I'm following on play-by-play. Did Ankiel just throw hill out at 2nd?
Yes . . . He hit it into the gap and Ankiel and Heyward almost collided, but Ankiel was able to cut it off and then threw a bullet to 2nd to cut down the runner trying for 2.

Infante has had at least 1 hit in 20 of this last 21 games. And in that span he has 34 hits, batting .378 and an OBP of .433

I am listening on radio while painting my old house so we can put it up for sale this week. This has been an annoying game not to be able to see any of.
