Yeah they're supposed to, but when you allow more teams in the incentives change, so I wonder of that changes how they'd rank them.

For example, in the 4-team playoff, say everything suggests ranking a particular team #4, but that sets up a rematch of a regular season or conference title game that they don't want (at least in the semifinal round). You know they'd rank that team #2 or #3. Under the old BCS, they would rank that team #4, and it didn't matter because only #1 and #2 played for the title.

The historical precedents are interesting, and maybe they'll hold, but they were also making those rankings knowing only the top 4 played for the title.

I'm not sure. That dynamic in 2022 was kind of the opposite of what we were discussing yesterday, which is that the committee seems to care who you beat more than who you lost to. I'm sure there was some benefit of the doubt there; if 2 teams are really close, give it to the one who has been more dominant over the preceding years.

We beat Alabama and LSU (who they also lost to), but their losses were really good (both one-possession road games that came down to the last play) while our loss to South Carolina was an absolute abomination.

We gotta at least give Georgia a game, if we don’t win, and we need Arky to win out to make that loss look better.

Another possible interesting scenario. If one loss Texas A&M beats one loss Texas, does Texas still get in?
