didnt a retired Pete beat Federer in one of those exhibition matches? i mean i know it wasnt really a pressure cooker of a situation, but still...

Wilson racquets have gone through at least 3 significant major overhauls while Federer has played them and he's won with all of them. Granted, his are customized, but even then, the weight, balance and feel of them have still dramatically changed. I don't think racquets make that big of difference for him. Give him a few months to adjust to the racquets back in Sampras' day or give Sampras a few months to adjust to the racquets of today and Federer wins the overwhelming majority of matches, regardless of the surface.

He couldn't generate the heat he does from the baseline with older racquets. Sampras used a board of a racquet. The no footwork open body hammer wouldn't exist and those running bombs would be much fewer. It has just become too easy to generate pace. Federer would still be an all time great, but wouldn't dominate like he has. This generation had really been void of competition, which isn't his fault. Until Nadal came along, it was Fed and everyone else, except on clay.

no way. I love that you can't win a major with a tie break. What a match. Followed while I was out on the golf course, then watched then end after the round. Just watched a replay a little bit ago.

Fantastic performance from both players and Andy has to feel good about his chances when he gets back on the hard court. He was still serving near 140 after it was 12-12 in the fifth set. That's insane. It might be the moment, but I think that was better than Federer-Nadal last year.

sorry, but i have no desire to sit there and watch ace after ace while neither guy can break the others serve, especially when i had other things to do yesterday. it was obvious at 6-6 that whoever broke first would win. no need to play another 10 points to figure that out.

also, no way this touches last year simply because Federer was supposed to win yesterday. i don't think you can call something the greatest ever when the guy who was supposed to win does, despite the effort for his opponent. this year doesn't even come close to Nadal last year.

This year was pretty good, but that match last year had about 10 rallies that were in the running for best ever. It was insane.
