The Comic Book/Graphic Novel thread

Just read a Secret Wars #1. It felt more like the Avengers climax that I was expecting. A lot of characters get a chance to shine as the Marvel U and Ultimate U go at it. I was unaware but the Ultimate Reed Richards is apparently a villain. Then there is a very heartbreaking scene with the real Reed just as the two universes die. Have to admit it was pretty intense. Look forward to the next issue.

Can one follow things if they aren't reading the entire universe? I'm interested but not reading current titles.

I wouldn't say so. I don't follow the Ultimate U at all so I was taken aback by Ultimate Reed Richards as a villain of sorts. It wasn't hard to overcome though. I think the first issue did a good job of catching the reader up as to why the two Universes are colliding. And honestly I think this issue was more or less the finale to Hickman's Avengers and the real Secret Wars story starts next issue.

I also have no idea what to expect from all the off shoots that tap into various timelines and classic stories. Not knowing is kind of the exciting part.

If you did want to get caught up quickly, Instead of reading the whole Avengers run you could probably look up a wiki synopsis.

Or there is a Prelude to Secret Wars TPB that I skimmed over. It basically reprints perteant issues by series writer Jonathan Hickman were he laid the nuggets that all lead to Secret Wars. I think it's roughly 10 issues.

So DC has officially undone the original 1985 Crisis with the Convergence series that has been going g on the past couple of months. I didn't read it.

The main stories will still be about the New 52 version but they are opening the doors for creators to tell stories about any era of DC characters they choose.

Secret Wars #2 was a good issue establishing Battleworld and Doom as its God. #3 got the real story moving forward. Without spoiling too much I'll just say there were survivors of the MU and UM. The main series is actually quite good.

Out of the handful tie-ins I've read I will say I've been mostly dissapointied. It's probably due to everything feeling g like a What-if. There have been a couple of gems though.

Future Imperfect - Peter David revisiting his future despot Hulk - 9/10

Master of Kung-fu - decent little tale featuring familiar faces in a pseudo feudal Japan. 8/10

Secret Wars Battleworld - this one was more of an anthology of short stories. I haven't read the 2nd issue yet but the first was enjoyable enough to check out the second. 7/10

Inferno - revisiting the Xen story of the late 80's definitely had the What-if vibe. The story had some interesting ideas going forward though. 7/10

Infinity Gauntlet - had nothing to do with the story of old but will feature Thanos and the Infinity stones. My question is whether this is a Battleworld version of Thanks or the one who is also in the SW main title. 7/10

Secret Wars Journal - another anthology with two tales taking place random time periods with familiar faces. Wasn't really work reading the next issue 4/10

Old Man Logan - easily the most dissapointing. This book picks up where the Mark Millar story ended but just meandered around with no sense of direction for 20 pages. I'll still check out the next issue to see where it goes but the first issue was a 4/10.

More Secret Wars stuff

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew your Vows: total What-If feeling but really fun read. With a family to think about Peter finaly learns a valuable lesson about responsibility what that means for his Spider-Man career. 9/10

Old Man Logan #2 was equally bad as #1. Outside of an appearance by the Age of Apocalypse X-Men it was slightly worse. I'm giving this book one more issue then I'm done. 4/10

Master of Kung Fu #2 - another solid issue. This one has been worth reading 8/10

Ultimate End #1 and #2 - I didn't really follow the Ultimate line but I was curious about this one. I thought it was going to be a Last Days type of story but it takes place on Battle World and seems to feature Ultimate and 616 counterparts interacting. I'm curious to see where this one goes and where it fits into the main SW story. First up two issues combined score of 7/10

Thors #1 - hands down the best tie-in book so far. The Thor Corp shows up.in almost every book but this one gives them full focus. It's set up like a cop drama as partners Ultimate There and Beta Ray Bill are investigating a series of murders with no leads. The first issue alone has a few twists that made this the best single issue of all the tie-in I've read. 10/10.

I picked up Secret Wars 1, 3, & 4 today. Couldn't find 2 so I'm guessing important stuff happened in it...cost is $8 on Amazon. Didn't pick up any cross overs.

#1 is the end of everything. #2 introduces Battleworld. If you don't read you won't be completely lost but it was a good issue.

The only tie-ins I can really recommend are Thors and Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows. The rest have been mostly underwhelming and just feel like glorified What If stories (so does ASM but it's a fun read).

Is Battleworld worth it? Looked dumb flipping through.

It's got a couple of short stories in each issue. I read the first one and it was pretty mediocre. The second I mostly just skimmed. Didn't bother with the third.

So to answer you question... No.

You really like characters with flaming heads huh?

There is one more issue of Secret Wars left and overall the event was a dud, IMO. The main title was pretty good but the spin-offs/tie-ins just felt like unimportant What If stories. None were particularly good and 99% was especially forgetable. In fact I pretty much gave up on most of them by issue 3. It didn't help that the post-SW "All-New All Different" (or All-Same-as-it-was) started back before the main story wrapped up. Very let down by something that promised big changes. I should have know better.

Although I will say I did enjoy Weirdworld. It was just different and stood on its own. The art was great and the story was just out there.

Just finished Sandman: Overture.

It is a prequel of sorts to the legendary Sandman series by Neil Gaimen that explains what Morpheus was doing that weakened him enough to be captured at the start of that series.

Written by Gaimen and illustrated by JHWilliams III this book is breathtaking. The story is heady sending Morpheus to the edges of creation to stop a mad star from destroying the universe. The art is absolutely stunning leading your eyes all over the page even after you've finished reading the words.

10/10

Finished up Secret Wars last issue. To reiterate I'll say the main book was good but I think you really need to read Hickman's FF run to get the full impact of the story.

I still say the overall event was a dud though.

Batman: Year One is on HBO right now. Bryan Cranston voices Jim Gordon.

I recorded it, but haven't watched it yet. The novel is the first batman book I bought.

I'm probably in the minority but I always like Year One more than The Dark Knight Returns.

Apparently their gonna reveal The Jokers true identity next month in Justice League issue number 50.

Wow that is very dumb the Joker is so damn terrifying because it's unknown who he was before he was the Joker. The mainstream continuity version has never had his real name and origin revealed.
If it's not broke don't fix it.

Mighty Morphin power rangers
The current series with the original 5 rangers plus Tommy the Green Ranger is great. The Rangers have a high wall to climb because the chaos energy of some item of the Green Ranger is something Rita Repulsa is manipulating which I think includes the Dragon zord.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Issue 1 Rebirth
8/10
What a great debut issue. Hal Jordan was able to break whatever was holding the Guardians and the Green Lantern, and it looks like Sinestro is the ruler of the Universe. It recapped things of the past with pictures which is kickass.
Hal was able to get his power ring back, change into his costume, and is going to fight to Super Villains to show the Universe a Green Lantern isn't dead along with other green lanterns assuming they resume protecting their sectors.
Can't wait to read more issues with Green Lantern(haljordan) taking the fight to super villains, and highly like the Ruler of the Universe plus his archenemy Sinestro.

No doubt this will show Sinestro is a savage Tyrant proving again no matter how good his intentions to create order in the universe that he's still a dreadful super villain because of his whole the ends justify the means mentality which is typically very messy.

I never understood why a person would say the shadow is a ripoff of Batman.
2 problems with that statement 1 The Shadow debuted before Batman, and 2 In a The Shadow Batman comic book crossover it is Batman saying that the Shadow is his primary inspiration.
