The Comic Book/Graphic Novel thread

So I read where TNT is planning a live-action Titans series. Sounds weak based off the characters they plan on using. While I like the idea of Nightwing, Starfire, and Raven, they round out the group with Hawk, Dove, and Barbara Gordon (as Oracle but for some reason not referring to her as Oracle). Not a good mix imo.

Yep I hear people won't be watching because of no beast boy. He's a changeling so most of the budget would be used on him.

We know drama
The slogan of TNT so I'm not shocked you got Barbara aka Batgirl and Richard aka Nightwing both on one team.
Although no cheap crap of what was seen in the garbage batman and robin for the drama between batgirl and NIGHTwing.

I saw the trailer of daredevil the nextflix series it looks great. I'm hoping kingpin wears his trademark ascot.

With Starfire on the show my guess is that is where Nightwing's affections will be directed.

Story I read actually suggested they'd play it as a love triangle.

It truly sounds awful. I just can't see it ever making it past test audiences, if it ever gets filmed at all.

I imagine starfire will wear a one piece tights suit similar to invisible woman for her costume.
Her very revealing costume that leaves most of her skin exposed is not practical at all, and seems like fighting, and flying in it that it would likely result in it falling off.

Marvel's May solicitations with Secret Wars #1

"Secret Wars" Commences in Marvel's May 2015 Solicitations - Comic Book Resources

Started reading Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four run. I'm through the initial part of the main title which gets "canceled" before launching the FF (Future Foundation) title. I love how Marvel makes it confusing as hell the explain the numbering.

Anyway, it's very good. It blends some of the best elements of the Lee/Kirby and John Byrne eras while bringing a new age sci-fi slant. I really like how there is one overall story being told but almost every issue can stand on its own. That's a quality severely lacking in 21st Century comic books.

If Hickman brings this kind of quality to Avengers and Secret Wars I'm really looking forward to reading them.

I saw a email of spider Gwen. I assume marvel has started over or maybe they've decided to bring back Gwen Stacy.

Great to see after vast years of waiting Martian Manhunter will again be getting his own series.

She is from an alternate reality

Oh thanks.

I guess that means great Gwen Stacy remains a rare character that got killed, and has remained dead.

Have you watched the teaser for daredevil the netflix series?

So far she is still.dead in the MU proper. Who knows after Secret Wars.

Yes I can't wait for Daredevil on Netflix. He is one of my favorite characters.

Currently reading Brubaker's Cap novels. Pretty good so far.

Brubaker probably wrote the best Cap ever (Mark Waid being a skin-of-the nose close second). Towards the end after Marvel forced him to put Steve Rodgers back in the RW&B you could tell he was burning out a bit. The last issue brings the whole story full circle and ends strong though.

If you like Brubaker you should check out Sleeper published by Wildstorm. It's about a super powered mole in a super villian terror organization (think Hydra). His only contact to agency he's works for goes into a coma in the first issue so he's stuck.

It's the series that really got me excited about his work. Shortly after I read it he took over Cap and I was pumped. It's only 3 books if I recall correctly. Heck I should dig them out and read them again too.

Bru did a good DD run too but it was more like a continuation of Bendis' run than his own take IMO.

Yeah, 3 books. I'm gonna read the third one as I pour through the Civil War stuff. They overlap.

I didn't read Civil War when it was published but I was reading Cap at the time. Bru did a good job of keeping the solo title separate but relevant to the crossover event. Obviously a key moment in the climax of Civil War impacts the solo title but don't feel that you have to read Civil War before finishing Cap.

As you get further into the run there is another crossover that affects the solo book the same way called Fear Itself. You don't really have to read Fear Itself though.

The newest ghost rider rides a flaming race car, and is a teenager.
I can't help but think of blue beetle with Reyes it's history repeating itself.

Ok, I have a question for all you comic book guru's. My son is 6, he is really into the super heroes stuff. He watches all the cartoons, loves the movies, and is all the time asking me questions about them. He is into reading now (very proud of him, he is in kindergarten, but reads at a 2nd grade level). So, my question is, Are there any any comic book series (either marvel or dc) that is geared towards younger readers? He really likes spiderman, superman, and the avengers stuff. As I've said here before I know next to nothing about this stuff, my only experience comes from the movies. Thanks.

At that age it may be best to hit up some young reader books in the kids section at Barnes and Noble (or the like). There are plenty of both Marvel and DC books in that category.

There are some comic series based off the cartoons and they stand out with an animated art style. Those may be a smidge advanced for him even at a 2nd grade level.

Definitely stay away from the mainstream stuff for now. Those are really written for 16-30 year olds.

Kudos to your little reader. I work with my 3 year old sounding out words every day. He was quick to learn the alphabet and the sounds by 18 months and he can usually tell you what later a word starts with if you verbally ask him. My goal is that he is reading some before kindergarten.

Now my 2 year old, he won't stay focused for such. He's to busy trying to get into things. He's a hands on kid for sure.

Thanks, I'll look into those. That's what I was hoping to find, Yeah the normal stuff is off limits for right now, I figured it was gear more towards teen+.

That is what we did with him. My wife and I worked with him early with his letters and numbers. He was sounding some stuff out in pre-k last year and doing well, but he's just exploded this year. When we went to the Ripley's aquarium last month he was reading all the signs and displays to us. He's made us very proud, I just hope we can keep him motivated and interested.

Marvel used to do a series of comics geared toward younger readers? Marvel Adventures? I can't remember for sure if that's what they were called or not, but that was several years ago. I'm not sure if they still make them or not. You should find a local comic shop and ask a clerk. They might have them in the bargain bin boxes even if the don't produce the series anymore.

Believable by appearance....though isn't Fisk supposed to be extremely large (not that I'd want that mind you)?

Supposed to be about 6' and but like a sumo wrestler. He's deceptively quick for his size.

Fun fact: the guy playing him was "Thor" in Adventures of Babysitting.

Finished Hickman's FF run. The second half was not as strong as the first and the last couple of issues almost seemed like a rush to tie up loose ends. I wonder if he had more planinto go forward but the Marvel Now shake up of 2012 cut them short. Probably a strong 3rd place for best FF 201 behind Lee/Kirby and Byrne. Overall I give the entire run a solid 8.

Next up is Hickman's Avengers run which is still ongoing and includesign a big Thanos crossover event called Infinity. Then will lead directly into Secret Wars in May.
