The death of defense in football...

They may lobby but I don't think they win that one. Many people watch for the explosive offense.

Saban started it during media days this year. Personally, I just enjoy football. Both a shootout or shutout are entertaining...

I'd rather have a low scoring smash mouth game or a higher scoring game on both sides (at least most of the game) like last night than a one sided high scoring butt whooping. It's called entertainment. I even enjoy watching the Vols play when it's more of a battle..with us winning of course.

This type of thing has been happening for many yrs though. It's just starting to hit the SEC now.

The defenses in the SEC overall were down this year. However, you have to remember all of the talent that went to the NFL last year. Bama, UGA, LSU, etc. lost a lot of guys off their defenses. Since that happened, a lot of the defenses had a lot of young players playing. I'd be willing to bet the typical SEC defenses will be back next year.

I hope your wrong op. Otherwise we will be watching the NBA all over again. You couldn't peel me away from a good NBA game in the early 90's. Now, I'll watch a playoff game every now and then.

World Cup soccer is one of the most exciting sporting events in the world, period. Most soccer fans criticize American football because it moves so slow and lacks action. Yes there is a lot of action during certain plays, but a lot of down time in between. Soccer has no down time, it's non-stop. I personally love both.

Unfortunately, the United States drew the hardest opening round imaginable. Sort of like the Vols schedule this year. Still fun to be a fan....I can't wait! U-S-A U-S-A!!!

Scoring points is excitement...

You gotta admit...

It's MUCH better than that 0-1 *********ry that's about to be played in Brazil...

Soccer = the PERFECT sport for 9 year old girls

Only about 6 billion people disagree with you.

Pllease, b1tching, I remember a few ago TN and bama played 9-6, just field goals, other games too, bama and LSU, boring, I would rather see a shout out and high scoring game then a boring slug fest. Defense wins, but I'm sorry, AU has a history making run offense.

I personally like games where field position and special teams are important. When teams move around the field like it is a basketball game, it removes some of the strategy. Totally subjective though. I like 1-0 pitching duels in baseball, too.

Me too. Love strategy in games. Like having to manufacture a run in those pitching duels. It's enthralling. Much better than watching a home run derby

59-42 in the SEC title game? Some people--no doubt CBS TV producers--would call that exciting. But that is just bad football--period. Two teams that cannot stop each other is bad football--and that kind of scoring fest is the rule in football nowadays, college and pros. Thank goodness for the 49ers and Seattle--two pro teams that will bring it on the defensive side. There aren't many good defenses anywhere anymore. The game is more like pinball than football--and with all the rule changes favoring the offense, who would even want to play defense?

On top of that, you've got NFL officials making bogus late-game pass interference calls to help trailing teams score late and win. I think there were four td in the vikings-ravens game in the last couple of minutes. I like watching skill players do their thing, but for various reasons scoring just is too easy in football these days.

Actually, it's become like the NBA, where a team frequently will have a 10-point lead with two and half minutes left in the game and lose. Just start watching the fourth quarter and wait for the questionable PI call late.

The rules have killed defense. U can't hit anyone high or low. Any hard hit gets flagged. U can't touch a receiver. Get rid of those rules and u will have defense again!

As an old used to be defensive lineman....I don't know how they talk these kids into accepting defensive positions anymore. The rules have changed over the last few years all favoring the offense, they already enjoy the advantage of knowing where the ball is going pre snap. Coach says your a defensive tackle, or a cornerback or a inside linebacker...I say I'm out!

You sound like a typical 'Merican. Soccer bad! Football good! Darn those grass fairies!

Soccer = Communist Kickball! :)

Defenses will catch up. They always do. They caught up with the wishbone, they caught up with veer, they caught up with wing t, they caught up with the "fun and gun" They'll catch up with the spread option. Just have to have the right personnel.

Both of my kids played soccor and I supported them both because it was healthy for them and they had fun and learned about playing a team sport.

It was a pain in the butt getting them to practice and games but it was for my kids.

Despite that I HATE soccor!!!

That's just me but everyone has the right to like or dislike certain things.

The fact is that it's the loco Liberals that are destroying football as we know it.

Kickoffs are too dangerous, LOL!

Next punts will be too dangerous, LOL!

D players can't accidently hit somebody in head to head contact, BS!

HOW does a D player miss a head to head when the other player ducks his head down on purpose?

D players can't hit the knees or below so WHERE can a D player make a solid hit to knock a O player off his feet?

Wes Welker took another hit to the head yesterday so now he can NOT play until independant Neurologist says he can play...BS!!!

If he says he feels fine and can play then let HIM decide if he plays or not because it's HIS body and it's HIS decision!!!

There's exactly NOBODY that forces anyone to play football at any level.

It the RIGHT and the FREEDOM of choice to let people decide for themselves if they want to play football, carry a gun, who to vote for, where or what to eat, ect, ect.

Socialist/Communist LIEberals need to sit down and shut up and let people decide for themselves what they want to do as long as it's legal!!!

EVERY single person knows that football has always been a tough, dangerous sport but if somebody loves the game and is willing to take the risk of injury then it's THEIR decision to make.

Do NOT belittle somebody because they love tough, smashmouth football just as we should NOT belittle people that love boring soccor.

Live and let live and stay OUT of other peoples business and lives.

The D has always caught up to every new style of O play and it will catch up to the hurry up spread too.

Just enjoy the games and hope the LIEberals will stop trying to destroy a great sport.

I have mixed feelings about it. The rules are certainly built around protecting the QB and receivers. Eventually, the NFL and the AA are going to have to move to a better pass interference understanding. In fairness, that should probably look like hand checking does now. If you touch a receiver after five yards, then it should be a penalty. Either you touched him before the ball got there are you didn't. We have to take some of the "judgment" out of that to make it fair across the board.

Right now…Auburn is simply playing old school power football and using formations to set the defense up for their option. Coaches will catch up, and eventually Marshall is going to get killed running the ball.

What's ironic is that it really is more of a throwback to old school option football. They just do it with a different formation than the flexbone. What isn't old school though is the hurry-up play calling.
