The Devrin Young experiment at KR

Devrin has the skills, but blocking is non-existent. Gangs of defenders are meeting him at full speed deep inside the twenty unhindered. Nobody is even slowing these guys down, much less creating lanes.

Your points make me question Devrin's decision to run the ball out of the endzone even more.

I hate how he runs. Good kid with solid hands but not a returner. Too small and not enough quickness/agility.

This. Kick offs are a lot different than they used to be with the ball and defenders being closer. If its at the GL or deeper take the 25 and be happy. The stats are with you.

Makes me lol every time someone on here talks about how a kid is gonna be the next Devin Hester because he returned kicks well in high school. It's like they don't realize that (probably) more than 95% of Power 5 skill position players returned kicks in high school and also all looked like world beaters.

I am glad that Devrin Young chose to come to Tennessee to further his education. In high school he was a very talented return man. I remember when he committed to Derek Dooley there were many on here that rejoiced. He also seems to be a high class individual.

It is equally unfortunate that he has had so much difficulty running kicks back with consistent success. He has been injured in his UT career. Whether this has a bearing on his performance, I don't know. He is also small. The relatively small guys generally have it much tougher in this game.

As an alumni, I would like to thank Devrin Young for choosing to further his education at Tennessee.

I don't know how he is as a person, but I have heard that he wasn't necessarily the most honest student ever in his early years at UT, specifically in a certain Rocks for Jocks class. To be fair, though, it's nothing other players weren't doing either.

absolutely love this kid, but he has to stop taking the kick-offs.... he is a perfect candidate to line up in the slot and take a couple of quick slants like we threw last night--- WAIT, we didn't THROW any slants last night that could have gone to a speedy, quick, elusive for 4-5yds kid like Devrin......sheesh.

DY's KR average last year was 25.9. That's hardly a chump number. Probably could take a knee more often and is a bit too easy to bring down it seems at times. Still, the numbers don't really support him being nearly as ineffective as he's often portrayed here.

His go to move...take it out from 7 yards deep, start to fall around 16-17, go down completely untouched around the 20.

/Thread!! There will never be a more accurate description of his return skills!!
Devrin "I'm gonna run 15 yards and fall down" Young!!

Agree 100000000% devrin ran it out 5+ yards deep every time last night and couldn't get past the 20. We have tons of guys that we can try at kick returning.. Why not move on?

I'm telling you people, its not Devrin, it's the guys blocking for him.

The same Devrin that forced LSU to squib kick the ball to Devrin, worried he (DY) might get us good field position.

The talent, speed and balance is there, the blocking isn't

CP did it with worst blocking then Devrin is getting. I'm tired of seeing that little guy back there. GHTFO.

Dude Cordarrelle Patterson is an athletic freak and is considered one of the best returners in the NFL, you can't be serious.

And what do you consider worse blocking?

And I'm telling you that when he catches the ball five yards deep in the endzone, he needs to take a knee.

And I agree with that but we don't know what the coaches are telling him. All I'm saying is, we have tons of fast and athletic dudes on our team, and some who don't even have a position like Devrin.

@anyone

Wouldn't you think they would have found someone better at fielding than Devrin?

P.s Wharton has a lingering injury apparently

Any time he is fielding, it shoots my nerves. I've seen more questionable decisions made by DY on the kick return game than I care to recall. I agree, we've got to have a freshman who can equal his ability.

Jacob Carter has great hands and runs with a purpose. Couldn't be worse

I completely agree! I call him Hercules any time he takes the field. Under Dooley, he was actually quite productive for his size. It's been a bummer that I haven't seen him on the field more.

Remember when you were being berated about "clueless" posts recently? Considering CP is in something like the top 5% of most dangerous people I've ever seen (any team, any level) running in the open field your trying to make this comparison isn't doing your "having a clue" perception much good.

There's simply nothing in it for the coaches to forgo having someone else replace DY if they thought they could do better. When CP got here DY got replaced because CP was/is simply amazing with the ball in his hands. CP left and DY came back into that position. Last year he averaged 25.9 yards per return. In fact in 2013 UT was 3rd in the conference in KOR average.

CP spoiled us no doubt but, c'mon, let's try to keep our heads together.

DY averages 23 yards per kick return for his career. That means he starts 5 yards deep then makes it to the 18. That is what we have seen basically for his whole time returning, especially this year. A coach needs to tell him, if it is in the end zone stay in the end zone.
