Iāve wanted a 10 game conference schedule in football for awhile. Nobody wants to sit there and watch a 50 point blowout for 3-4 hours anyways. If they could do it in 2020 then why canāt we do it every year? You wouldnāt run the risk of stadiums not being sold out. Selling out games isnāt hard for some places but it is harder for others. Attendance (ie ) would be up across the conference. Itās a no brainer but for some reason they are against it.Well go to a 10 game conference schedule in football and get rid of Chattanooga and Austin Peay.
They have to keep the lower programs up and running. Could you imagine how little youth and high school football players there would be if there were only power 5 roster spots available. Itās a necessary inconvenience to have to play 9 instead of 10. Also gives folks who may not be able to afford the bigger games a chance to see the Vols play. Good to build fans out of children when that might be only games they can attend Etc..Iāve wanted a 10 game conference schedule in football for awhile. You could still schedule a lower program every year and a quality OOC game also. Iām not saying to eliminate all the lower programs but maybe have each Power 4 school schedule a lower level program and triple their money whenever they play. So instead of paying a team $1M you could pay them $3M to come play. Or eliminate the conference championship games and that opens another regular season slot. Conference championship games in football will probably be obsolete in the coming years anyways with the CFP expansion. There are always ways to make it work. They have to keep the lower programs up and running. They wonāt eliminate that money grabā¦but in a conference like the Secā¦the title game is about to mean about as much as the conference tournaments in basketball and baseball. Both teams will be solidly in the top 12 and they are not going to be out there risking injury when they could possibly have to play 3-4 more games. This is also why they wonāt be going to 10 game conference schedules. 9 games in conference, a quality OOC team, possible Sec title game, and 3-4 playoffs games now is too many tough games for these kids bodies to handle. It is great for the fan but just wait until a top team loses a star player in the quarters or semi final games because of wear and tear and you will start having āpseudoā national champions. Fans will love it for all the added games and I think it ultimately benefits the Vols but we are talking a possible 16-17 game season now. Better take that extra āoffā week and use it wisely going forward. You could still schedule a lower program every year and a quality OOC game also. They arenāt just kids now though. They are semi-pro athletes. They wanted the money. Go earn it.They wonāt eliminate that money grabā¦but in a conference like the Secā¦the title game is about to mean about as much as the conference tournaments in basketball and baseball. But watch NFLā¦guys ease into seasonsā¦when eliminated they also barely play. Itās an epidemic in sports culture and you are going to see it more and more in college. Guys only play if something is on the line. No loyalty, no playing for the name across the jerseyā¦we all see it. All of us here just love Tennessee and what it means to us or at least what it used to mean to allā¦those days are gone. We all know it and itās sad. They arenāt just kids now though. Kids are already opting out of bowl games so it wonāt be anything new. Honestly the sooner these kids are considered employees and have enforceable contracts the better imo. Because if you are cleared by medical staff to play and you refuse to play then you are in violation of your contract. You can actually suspend kids for doing stupid stuff and fine them on top of it. There will always be idiots because they are still fresh adults but I think it will curb a lot of the dumb decision making if they know their money is at stake. But watch NFLā¦guys ease into seasonsā¦when eliminated they also barely play.
