@BruisedOrange , you wrote

" keep investing in your parents' investment."

What do you mean by that specifically, because my parents have invested heavily in me, in Christ and in food banks. My mom is particularly good at investing in certain individuals in her community meaning neighbors and that's by getting involved their lives and being a consistent host who provides a safe, good, fun place for kids and their parents to visit frequently.

For example my friend Brian who just graduated, has for two years been an almost daily visitor at our house along with his mom and younger sister.

I mimic my mom's hosting and manners and how there is a fairly large group of people that meet up for dinner at one of the dining halls where we spend quality time together. On the weekends, I enjoy cooking, but I definitely don't have her capacity to feed 25 people. I cook some and get take out or things from the store that only require time in an oven.

I get a lot of what I call restorative satisfaction from helping other people on a one on one basis and I'm currently helping my girlfriend's neighbor and my buddy Brian for the next couple weeks just by hooking them up with good jobs that pay well while living in our condo for couple of weeks because they're both curious about living in Atlanta and life at GT in general.

Mavs in danger of getting swept in the Finals. This always felt like the Celtics year from the get go. They have been the best team all season and nobody really challenged them. If they win the next game they will finish 16-2 in the playoffs which would be the 4th best winning percentage of all-time behind:

16-1 ‘16-‘17 Warriors
15-1 ‘00-‘01 Lakers
12-1 ‘82-‘83 76ers

@BruisedOrange

I'm going to loosely, go through your last post backward,s for reasons that will eventually become obvious .

I think you're a good investment, Drewbydoo. If there's ever anything I can do for you, that's what I do, and the best thing I've done for most of my life. 🙏💪🧠

For several reasons, the largest being spiritual, my sole focus starting in 7th grade was to focus on mind, body and soul. So your emoji collection,🙏💪🧠, wasn't missed or nor did it fall on deaf ears.

Life's unpredictable that way, and about to get more unpredictable. It'll be a good time to be on the side of the One whose agenda will ultimately succeed, even though it will appear to be several runs down going into the bottom of the 9th.

I view this life as one of stewardship of all that I have been given or earned for they are one and the same to me. They are mammon and temporary and restricted to this life, but likely influence the next life.

It's also been my observation and experience that He will do most of the heavy lifting and I just need a small amount of faith and to put in some effort. Perhaps inspired effort, but effort nonetheless.

As for my own life, it's been both predictable and yet unimaginably unpredictable in a very positive way. I feel like the people alive right now are seeing society change dramatically faster and faster with each passing year. I feel like we are accelerating towards extreme turbulence and that's why I like talking to people who I view as "living history". People that are 70-90 years old have the best long view of what's going on, but so too does the internet. ie I believe The Great Depression was the 5th Depression that the USA has faced so far. Most people aren't aware of that.

One thing I'm on the lookout for is something I came up with on my own: If you take any 70 year contiguous period from 1776 up until now, only my parents generation hasn't been put to the test with severe trouble in the USA. No dust storms, or World Wars, civil war etc. As a percentage of the USA population, Vietnam, 9/11, the Great Recession that began in 2008, COVID don't rise to the level of how difficult life could be in the USA as the other events.

The same is obviously true for my generation, so it looks like my parents and my generation will go through that together.

Also, how end-times-ish did WW2 seem? It probably seemed that way, but here we are.

Finally, I believe there is a pattern in the bible where someone who doesn't look like a good candidate to be a good leader or someone is victorious when seemingly set up for failure is ultimately victorious. ie Moses or David of David and Goliath or Jesus himself given who gave birth to him and where he was born.

I think you've been reading or have read an interesting conversation that has occured (in this coming weekend game thread) where a dad was asking for advice about his son and he wrote thing along the lines that his son is at that age (17-21) where that age group doesn't want to listen to his parents and he's looking for another source. YOU may want to interject your wisdom into that thread, but for now, I'm hesitant to do so.

Thank you for your initial offer and reply by the way. Again, it didn't fall on deaf ears.

Okay, I'm onto the next part of your reply which is the ... most intriguing to me.... then, I'm just going to goof around, perhaps on Volnation or IRL. The last couple of days have been a challenge, but contemplating what you had written was inspirational for me and my housemates to discuss and contemplate. Your audience is slightly more than just me, but I hope others in VolNation are intrigued in your offer and perspective : )
There are several authors who have identified a cyclical rise and fall of nations/cultures/times of plenty. I think there's something to it, but as a Chinese friend pointed out to me, maybe that's true in the West--but not so much in China. Whole different timeline there.

If there is an earthly factor which presents or reflects in those theses, I would look for its impetus in the European, then European-American, banking world.

You might enjoy poking around in a site called solari.com which was started by a former Asst. Dir. of H.U.D. in the Bush administration, and who had two solid careers on Wall St. ...before the gov't tried to get rid of her for documenting D.C. corruption and trillions of dollars that are missing. For me, it was a whole new world behind (and ahead of) the political world. It's a peek behind the curtain at how things actually get done.

A lot of her content is behind a paywall, but here's a good starting point, if you're interested. I think God gets us interested in certain things at the right time. The Missing Money – The Missing Money

And that's true what you said about the people God calls to special assignments. They have some training and preparation (Moses had been tending his father-in-law's flocks for 40 years all over the terrain he would be leading Israel, but public speaking to a different pharaoh and returning to the site of his greatest character failure... yikes!

Each career I've had, no matter how fulfilling or how much of my A-game it used, also demanded of me things I struggled with or was intimidated by. God, like any good parent (or baseball coach), understands that proven character is a prerequisite for success, regardless of our resources or skillset.

There are things we can only learn on this side of heaven. And they're seldom easy things. But like you said, they prepare us for something else, a return to this world redeemed and made right, and we to our original task of "managing gardens." I kinda think that job title is misleadingly simplified!

Who are the writers, theologians, shepherds you've found most informative or inspiring at this point in your spiritual pilgrimage? The young guys a little older than you seem to have found a fresh voice for their questions in CS Lewis, and a hoped for stability in the Eastern Orthodox church. I'm curious why so many who look backward into the past stop short of the beginning? But it's definitely part of their generational zeitgeist. What's yours? Seen any patterns?

Greg Boyd's God At War got me out of a seminary-seeded theological cul-de-sac by opening some new windows. Then Michael Heiser filled in most of the missing cosmological pieces (and our intended role amongst) with Unseen Realm, as well as confirming some long-held convictions on how we should read/study the Bible. And now, I'm late to the party engaging N.T. Wright, who is challenging me with some new perspectives, confirming much, challenging some, and not yet convincing me on a few. But any writer who causes me to ask God questions (rather than ask myself questions about God) earns space on the bookshelves.

The second response will have to wait til tomorrow, after a morning tire repair. C'est la vie!

Geez the White Sox are 17-52 and on pace to win less than 40 games. They started the season 3-22, then somehow amazingly went 11-8, and have now gone 3-22 again 🤣

I could not imagine being on a team that went 3-22 at two separate parts of the season. 6-44! How is that even possible to be THAT bad! The fact they were over .500 for a 20-game stretch is nothing short of miraculous. And the crazy thing is they have a pitcher that ranks T-15th in wins in the majors!

@cobbwebb0710 looks like your Mets record is getting broken this year. Not only that, they are going to be in contention for worst record since 1899 😬

It’s looking very favorable that the Celtics could sweep the Mavericks.

Well I’m very happy the Cubs rebounded to defeat the Rays 4-3.
Thad was greatly needed after the very disappointing outcome on Tuesday because the Cubs weren’t able to defend a narrow lead in the bottom of the 9th inning.

It was a very amazing day for Padres fans and the Padres that had the very happy outcome that is Jackson Merrill’s second home run resulting in the Padres defeating the Athletics 5-4.

The White Sox fans in Chicago can be a lot less depressed by eating deep dish pizza at Giordano’s, UNO, or other deep dish pizzerias.
Deep dish pizza and Soda are both reliable rocks that can’t disappoint them.
Also, they can be very happy watching WWE, and seeing entertaining movies that are enjoyable distractions during a very abysmal season.

How many of you besides @OldTimer watched the team back then?

I watched them. Back then, neither the bookstore nor anyone else had jerseys for sale; nobody cared about making them for sale to the public. Simcox let me borrow a jersey (not the type in the photo) and I shipped it to Ebbets Field Flannels where they made a custom one that I gave to my girlfriend (who I later married).

All I remember is they had the hats available…I then lost the hat somewhere and I miss that damn thing…do you remember the home Miami series back then…that was as good as LNS ever got until Tony came along

I love this, thanks for the sweet romantic story.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition decision has backfired. Guarantee you more people will tune into Netflix to watch Chestnut vs Kobayashi over the normal competition. Huge mistake on their part.

womt be watching either
