The emergence of Squirrel

It's called the read option for a reason. The qb reads the defense at multiple points in the process. Watch HH run it and then go back and watch Milton. I don't want anyone to go down - I want quarterbacks that can execute the offense. Not exclusively a result of qb play, but we punted more in the second half against an OVC team than we have the last three SEC games combined. That's a function of qb execution and excellence.

What part of "we're up 50 against a Division 3 level school and we're not going to risk a QB injury or run up the score any further" don't you understand? Quite frankly, I'd be shocked if Heupel had Milton running real RPO's at that point of a game like this.

Certainly hope and pray " Not ". Milton reminds me of the Florida qb only worse - great athlete - has no ability to read or dissect what is occurring on the field. He handed off 10 times today when the play was stuffed and he could have kept it and still been running. He has NOOOOOOOO feel for playing quarterback, no feel for reading defenders and defenses, the rush, etc. He is a remarkable athlete though. How anyone ever thought that he should be starting ahead of Hooker .... including coaches - I find maddening. QB's absolutely have to be the smartest guys on the field -

He is not the answer IMHO.
He’d be a 6 win qb next year. Fact

If Tillman returns and Hyatt gets hurt, do you think squirrel would start instead of them moving one of the other 3 guys into the slot?

That's a good question. I think Squirrel probably starts, though, because you need that speed guy who can take the top off the defense and the others don't provide as much of that.

Comments like this are absurd, no offense. Hooker had three years at Va. Tech and I don't ever recall him being touted as a great decision maker - hell, I had never even heard of the guy, period. He came in here to a system that fits his strengths, and learning from a coach who clearly knows how to develop QB's.

We have one of the highest rated HS QB's committed here. Who's to say he won't be even better, especially with the influx of talent and depth we will have on the entire roster? Milton has had an entire year under Heupel and will have a full off season, and Nico will be learning right from the start of his college career.

We finally have a coach and an administration with vision and a real plan - just enjoy the ride. The difference moving forward is having more talent throughout the roster, meaning we won't be as dependent on QB heroics to win every week. But with Heupel, I have no doubt that Hooker won't be the last Heisman-level QB that comes through here.

Sorry, I always take offense when someone calls my response absurd. Milton can throw but not run, questionable decision making, a freshman QB can't learn this offense that quickly, so he is a total wildcard. Tayvan probably has the best chance to be as good in all 3 areas, but not by next year. So, unless we have hidden a QB somewhere expect a drop-off at this position next season. After that anything is possible.

I wonder how long it will take for Nico to acclimate to the speed and pressure.

So do I. Now, I admit I've only seen a few pieces of film on him, so I may be way off target with my next comments. It may be his long, lanky frame that makes him seem to tower over other players. However, it seems like he is a sophomore or junior year high school kid playing with and against middle school varsity squads. In the SEC, he'll find he's up against behemoths and leviathans whose intent is to inflict the greatest harm on him. So I wonder about his acclimating too.

How can you make that assessment? It is comparing oranges to bowling balls. The same bad coaches that stuck with JG are the same bad coaches that created to disaster that he became. No development, no OL, no real offense. He was one of the highest rated QBs out of high school. I believe our coaching staff could have made him far better. As for his football IQ, it is hard to make a good decision when the offensive play calling appeared to be based on plays on index cards randomly pulled from a hat. Can you guys not just let it go? Hendon had admitted flaws in his mechanics as well.

JG passing mechanics resulted in his getting the ball out very slowly and often late. He had 4 or 5 years here, one at Washington State, and one in camp with the pros. He didn't have a feel for a pass rush or when it was time to escape the pocket and run. No amount of coaching was going to fix some of that -- playing qb is somewhat instinctual and requires adjusting on the fly to constantly changing situations.

Even if you have been tasked with handing it off every single time no matter what - you still need to read and run your progressions just so that the defense can't key on the rb every time. One day you will be in there and not playing UT Martin. It doesn't look like he is reading anything - simply handing the ball off - not watching or reading the d- line just watching the rb and where he is handing off the ball.

Peyton took the job because of injuries to the two qbs ahead of him. He did win it over another freshman phenom but he would likely not have seen the field had Jerry Colquitt not had a season ending injury in the first game of the season.
That’s what I was saying.True Freshmen don’t usually come in and start right away

So I've been told.

Because we're so talented at QB that we can redshirt the most talented QB we've ever recruited 🙄

Pretty sure that Vitello redshirts his freshmen pitchers when they come in here throwing 98 with nasty breaking stuff. Oh wait. Well at least the basketball team never starts a true freshman at point guard. Oh wait. We will likely play the best qb or qb's that give us a chance of maintaining our current momentum - could be Milton, could be any of the others. Should be a spirited spring and early fall with lots of competition.

I disagree. It's called let's get thru the day without any injuries. You want QB's who can execute you say....I say let the man who turned this program around in 18 months from a s***hole to ranked #3 in the country make decisions on who can execute the Offence. He thinks Milton can.

I’ve been saying this for a while. Super talented but has no feel for the game. Doesn’t have it between the ears as far as football goes.

So with Milton we beat Pitt, Florida, LSU, Bama, Kentucky, Georgia this year? You’re smoking crack. But next year he can get it done?

Where did I say that? Good Lord, that’s a bizarre inference from a statement pointing out that your statement was one of opinion, not fact.

Most of us learned the difference between an opinion and a fact in grade school.

You think it may have to do with running the clock to make the game end faster. More likely explanation than your criticism of Milton.

So you're saying - run the offense poorly - so we have to constantly punt - giving UT Martin the ball so they can outscore us in the second half and simultaneously we can work on our second team defense and UT Martin can run out the clock. Makes perfect sense to me.

Again, most of that can be attributed to horrific OL play and even worse development from one of the worst coaching staffs in UT history.

Or maybe he just wasn't that great playing the position of qb at the D1 level. Very, very few are.
