The Endzone Garden Thread

Ooo, real lilies! Do you have to stake the super-tall ones?

Not yet. It's quite sturdy. It has a slight lean to it, but not as bad this year as previous years. I did have to stake it last year as it had more lean to it. It's more erect this year. And the real tall one is dead straight. Wife informed me at lunch to get some this evening.

For some reason, the daylilies scattered around have gone berserk, and now we need to build a flower bed to park them in. Nice problem to have, but geeze, let me come up for air! I’m still fine-tuning the vegetable garden!
Ha! Two properties ago, I was landscaping to alter the flow of runoff to be further from the house. I dug up some day lilies, tossed these onto a spot of soft earth. Later, when my main chore was done, I was tired. My wife asked what to do with the day lilies. In reply, I asked if she liked them where they lay (this extended rows of them along our property line). She nodded yes. I kicked the lilies about into a rough pattern and stomped them into the soft earth. My wife was puzzled, but I assured her they’d b fine. Sure enough, the next Spring, this group was as hardy and prolific as the established ones.

Ok, I’m impressed. Asheville hasn’t had a June 9 frost ever. So far.

Hope everything came through ok.
I'll let you know Saturday morning. It's raining now and 47 degrees. They say around 4AM the Frosty will come. Got all veggies covered good... cannot lose the garden again!

The rain should help them get through, plus the current ground temperature, along with the cover, of course. Good luck!

Yikes! and/or Woots!

Yikes/Woot 1: I found out yesterday that I made it to the interview round for the county Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program, three-month training beginning at the end of August. Panicked babbling before interview panel scheduled for Thursday morning of next week.

Yikes/Woot 2: Just got invited to have my garden on the local garden tour in September. It appears that I’m going to have to do something about the dang flea beetles and caterpillar loopers after all, before they eat said garden.

Please wish me luck, because I’m gonna need it.

Lightning bugs!

Question for all, especially those in KnoxVegas: when did you first see lightning bugs this year? Back in the 30-some-odd years I lived in Knoxville, they were reliably always seen around my son’s birthday, May 28.

When we first moved to AVL, they didn’t show up until mid-June, which is understandable. They were a bit later last year, and I only started seeing them this year 3-4 days ago.

Are they later than usual for anyone else?

The grandkids usually play outside until right at dark. They have just mentioned seeing lightning bugs the past few days, so I think the lightning bugs must be showing up a little later than usual. @VolNExile
