lolCash crop gone have you standing in the welfare line if things don't get better
I’d adapt to 7b. I need cooler summers.lol
Gardening is just a hobby for us that unexpectedly (why? haven’t we learned?) suddenly takes off in August, burying us. It does take a while for things to get going, then whammy.
Fortunately, our church supports a school-based food bank nearby. Plus, the plumbers who came here yesterday and did their magic left with big bags of veggies.
Edit to add: we’re up in the mountains. We don’t have the typical southern growing season.
Are Asheville’s summer highs still in the mid-80s? How many days in the 90s?We just got bumped from 6b to 7a, and sadly, I think we’ll be 7b in no time. But for now, it’s pretty great.
I miss the winters, but 7a isn’t that bad. Combined with this latitude (day length), we’re in a bit of a sweet spot.
Made me look. Are Asheville’s summer highs still in the mid-80s? How many days in the 90s?
Aaaand, sure enough, just found two Black Krim and a German Johnson on the vines with chomps out of them.Oh geeze, one more thing to brood over!
Two houses ago, we grew tomatoes in pots on the deck. I would come home from work to find picked tomatoes sitting on the deck rail with one squirrel-sized bite in each.
Either eat the whole danged thing, or leave it alone! Not one bite, and then go sample another.
At least our idiot cat keeps squirrels away. She’s too dumb to actually catch them, but she does run them off.
I’m ready to believe that it works. One interesting bit is that many plants, including tomatoes, “want” to grow upwards. At the same time, indeterminate tomatoes love to sprawl.Don't know but it looks like it. Pic was something I saw & posted for an option. These are not mine. Sorry for any confusion
Can you try to net them at this late point? Of course, then they’d be protected from you as well. The mockingbird continues its attack upon my ripening tomatoes. I am befuddled. It’s not for lack of water - it’s been raining every day this July. It’s not for food - there are no bugs or grubs in my maters. It pecks holes into red tomatoes indiscriminately. Fawker. A dozen fruits ruined so far.
