When you used dead leaves for mulch, do you chop them up first with a lawnmower (or whatever)?
I've been bad. I have an endless supply of leaves and I never use them. But, I am beginning pronto. I rake with my riding mower, so they are mostly chopped up and been percolating since last fall.

We saved a four foot tall pile of leaves, figuring they would nicely rot down to leaf mold, and the pile was still about 3 1/2’ tall six months later. The chopped ones had done a lot better, which I expected, but the intact ones looked as if they’d just dropped from the trees. So I’m a bit wary of using them as mulch at this stage.

Next year I’ll periodically throw blood meal (nitrogen) on the leaf pile to help get it going. I don’t have years to wait on stuff!

Maybe a cover of black plastic will break them down in a season ?? I could use some blood meal on my corn for a shot of nitrogen (corn cocaine).

I also have tons of under leaves that have been percolating for some time. I just have to be willing to go out and rake some top leaves back to get to it. Firugred end of season would till it under anyway and it will be ammending the soil well enough by spring.

I have a lot of deciduous trees and copious leaf fall each year. Most go to the curb for pick up. Some I vacuum up with the leaf blower and add to my compost bin. I’ve a modest vegetable garden. I mulch with wheat straw.

You must have one of those TFG/Souce leaf blowers. It blows and sucks.

Cucumbers are blooming like crazy, cilantro looks amazing, green onions are slowly getting there, peppers looking great, and tomatoes are being rambunctious as usual. I've seen minimal pests and no disease that is obvious. So I guess my first year garden at the new house has been a success at this point!

Added all hte squah to the mulched in list last night. And may have stunbled into a mulching gold mine. I stopped at Ace near work to get a ble. THere is a head high pile of loose straw about 20 feet long they sweep from the trailer. Good and seasoned. Made a remark about it. Guy loading the bale said they'd prob let me have whaever I wanted. Going back with a pitch fork to find out.
