We made two quarts of BnB pickles, and two quarts of squash pickles today.
We used this recipe: Zucchini or Summer Squash Pickles

I will be curious to see how they are. My wife says she hopes they are not like Aunt Bea's "Kerosene Cucumbers."

THE BEST pickles. So addictive. My last batch from 2 years ago were a little mushy. I got some pickling lime to soak them in this year to keep them crisper, but didn't get the cukes I needed to make a batch. We have a grocer that sells the boston cukes. I may go buy some. Ionly need about 2-3 pounds to make a batch. I use a BnB recipe though.

A side branch of one the Glass Gem corn plants broke off, so I was able to check for color.

It obviously didn’t get completely fertilized (I have not yet ventured into helping corn plants mate), but I’m surprised how vivid the colors already are. I had read that they need to dry a bit to deepen. It will be interesting to see if the other plants (the seeds were different colors) have different shades on the cobs.

@Behr I think you had asked to see a pic.

No, you said you were going to give it all away and I asked you to save at least one and pop it. I've never tried it and very curious.

But I'm glad you posted the picture, it's really cool. They're beautiful.

GVF, I would kill to have just 3 or 4 of those seeds for next year. I could take those and turn them into several hundred and then have them here. Allen's Kentucky Wonder is the ONLY green bean that we will eat other than my family's canned beans.

This is THE coveted bean in our house. I'm 3rd Gen to grow it that I know of. This is what you'll be awaiting:

I can't wait to retire. I have so much to learn and a garden to build. Has to be mole proof, deer proof, bird proof, rabbit proof, vole proof, etc.

As it happens, I was looking at some of those corrugated raised bed kits on a website. They have a stainless wire mess option for each configuration that goes under each bed just for those burrowing critters.

It's really weird though. We live out of town, pretty good acreage. My garden is bordered on two sides by the woods with corn fields accross the street. Granted, I'm a good dozen or more passes on the mower between the garden and woods. The deer do move, and early in the season when the plants are small I'll see a good bit of deer tracks going through, but as the garden grows and their routes are blocked, they go around. I've never had a problem with them getting into my corn. Couple of years ago I had a bunch of squirrels strip my corn, but not the last two. I do have a mole problem in general all over, but they haven't destryed my garden.

I don't think the moles will be an issue as much as the rabbits and deer. We have a ton of coyotes that keep the rabbits to a low roar but they don't put a dent in the deer. However, my treestand arrived yesterday and will go up this Monday. The corn will go out and a fresh pile of mineral. I plan to dent the does this year.

And no Exie, I don't shoot does that have yearlings running with them.

I didn’t think you would. I’ve never objected to wild game hunting. It has its place in the ecosystem. We can’t rely on vehicles to cull herd overpopulation.

Earlier this summer I saw 12 full grown does run down the backyard, jump into a creek with an 8 ft drop then up the other side. Ima get me a couple of those for the freezer.

Better that than some poor steer standing in cowchit up to its belly, waiting for slaughter. I don't like the taste of venison, but running free until the last minute sounds way preferable to commercial feedlot operations.

You know, if you have an excess of venison, I'll travel to you to take some off your hands. :)

I grew them one year when were still in GA. Had good luck with them and really liked the tomato itself. Refreshingly citrus in a tomato way.
Thanks! Supposedly they have pretty good disease resistance.

I’m looking for a hybrid slicer replacement for Better Boy, something different from the basic orangey-red hybrid tomato.

Cutting the list of next year’s indeterminates down to five is killing me! 😭😭

Took me a few seasons of sparse yields before I admitted to myself that the best best deterrent other than over the top fencing is a couple active dogs. We’ve been in between dogs for a few years and my gardening is on hiatus.

Wife refuses to get another dog. I haven't showed her that Tik Tok that was posted this morning. It would kill her. Bought got her talked into a couple of barn cats though. Mole killers!

I have been told no more dogs til I am home to be the caretaker. Probably fair but I do miss my doggies.
