The Foreign Trade Thread

You're right to at least some degree. @joevol33 proved that the other day. His excuse was that some of them threw stones so they can all go back to Honduras and get murdered.

I recall some saying we should shoot the asylum seekers. My comment about people paying lip service was not meant to be a disagreement with you. I think people who say it's all about legality are usually FOS. Never seen one of those types oppose Trump's restrictions on legal immigration

"They can all go back to Honduras and get murdered" Lol. Guess we should just let anyone in, from any country that wants in. Please explain to me why we need more poor people in this country. Tell me why that benefits us.

The neat thing about making a demand with no standards is you can then claim victory even when nothing has really changed.

Remember when Trump threatened to close the border and then a few days later said Mexico was cooperating, even though Mexico said it hadn't changed anything?

Fun fact: Illegal border crossings go down during the summer because it's hot.

Have you considered that maybe Trump is actually working on solving a problem instead of just trying to get points by claiming a victory? Maybe the Mexican politicians haven't been working very hard at the problem because they know that the Leftists in the US Congress were also working against Trump's attempt to slow the flow of illegals.

Anybody with a functioning brain knows that closing the border wasn't ever going to happen. Making Made in Mexico goods more expensive is a valid threat.

Exactly. When you need to get another country's attention to resolve a problem, you have to find a pressure point. Money/income/trade is generally one thing that will get their attention. We've concentrated too much on money as a carrot through foreign aid; sometimes you gotta use the stick. It's also time to do the something about the banana republics south of Mexico; cut off foreign aid and you get simply more Venezuela, so that's a bit more complicated than just money.

How will we know if Mexico is actually solving the problem?

And yet Trump and a bunch of staff insisted the threat was real for days, until he extended the deadline until next year.

When there aren't caravans with tens of thousands trekking our way. When the US border patrol isn't catching 3,000+ people everyday. When the Mexican drug cartels aren't allowed to expand their operations. When US tourists can go to Mexico and not be in danger when they're away from the resorts.

Getting border crossing back down to where they were when Obama left office would be a big win for Trump.

I know someone else tried to correct you today. So for the second time, apprehensions are not the same as crossings. We really need a wall so we can play whack a mole with the really determined ones ... that would significantly cut into both crossings and apprehensions, and provide entertainment to those having to control the border. And just to keep anyone from getting huffy, asylum seekers could drop in and apply at any US embassy or consulate they pass on the way through Mexico.

The other day I heard it said by a talking head, that it is estimated that the number of illegals crossing who are not apprehended is roughly 3x the number that are. But hey, who’s counting anyways, amirite?

Right, Mexico isn't working hard to take care of our border security for us because of liberals.

Have you considered that maybe Trump has no idea what he's doing?

Perhaps, but he's way ahead of the last guy in knowing what to do.

Are you sure about that? Sometimes doing nothing is the right move. Obama paid lip service to being tough on illegal immigration, but anybody with a brain could see that it's a much smaller problem than it was 15 years ago. Now we got Trump leveraging our economy in a completely stupid effort to fix a problem that's already getting fixed. At best, Trump is blowing hot air and will declare victory without ever having to impose a tariff. If goes forward with this, he's an inexcusable moron.

What they're not working hard enough at is allowing caravans to run through their borders.

What they're not working hard enough at is shutting down the drug trafficking.

The issue isn't primarily at the border.

Anybody with a brain knows that the war on drugs doesn't work. Demanding Mexico fight it harder is just a demand for wasted effort.
