I agree with most of this report, except for 4. I agree that he's played poorly the last two games, but I don't see who would replace him on this team. In my mind, UT needs to use Bone as a backup point guard, at least temporarily, so he isn't a current solution. Nearly everyone is calling for McBee to have less minutes, so I don't think that's a solution either. I don't think we want to play McRae either because of his inexperience.
What we really need is for Tatum to play with authority when Hopson takes a break. Tatum's mindset against Alabama was one of the main factors in UT's good second half. He has enough quickness and ballhandling skill to drive on most opponents, and I think his driving is important to the team's effectiveness, especially when Hopson is not in the game. Again, in the Alabama game where he mostly drove to the basket, he had 4 assists (though he also had 3 turnovers which I will assume are mostly from the first half where everyone played badly (FSN)). Plus, Tatum is a streaky shooter, and he has been shooting threes horribly lately (2 of his last 15), so driving would be a good idea to prevent some presumably bad shots.
To some extent, I wish that Hopson and Tatum would not play at the same time because they fill (or try to fill) essentially the same role of the scoring wingman. I might even like a worse version of what the Heat do now - let Hopson be the main contributor for two 10 minute periods of the game while passing it to Harris/Williams when possible, have one 10 minute period where Tatum plays aggressively while Hopson rests a bit, and then have the last 10 minutes where they essentially do what they do now. I seriously doubt that will happen and am somewhat unsure of how well it would work, however, so Tatum might as well just play more aggressively in the current system because more of his turnovers come from passing it to Williams at the three point line than from when he tries to make a play.
Also, it would be nice if Tatum played smarter and took less gambles on defense. Some of his turnovers and steal attempts now have reminded me of J.P. Prince's decisions last year before he started improving, and I'd like to see him play more like J.P. Prince did after he improved (even though Tatum is much less talented at driving, I think he's good enough to beat most SEC defenders and fill that role).
