The Gardening Thread

Not to mention some Broccoli

And a wagon load of melons and pumpkins

How big is your garden?

Here is a picture of part of the garden when I plowed it this spring.

If you look closely, you can see what my dog, Rock, thinks about the garden. :)

And here's a photo from one end, but it probably doesn't help much.

I can't remember how big it is. Seems like it is just under 140 feet wide and 600 feet long. However, when you are working in the garden and that hot old summer sun makes you beg for your next breath, it surely is big enough.

what's the best way to get rid of squash bugs on my pumpkins? I sprayed it with a pesticide, but there are still some on them...

I have a question for everyone! Don't mean to start a thread within a thread but:
What is your favorite kind of Tomato and Why??

I absolutely love tomatoes but the Big Boys n' Better Boys in my part of TN just don't seem to have any acid flavor in them. Any suggestions?

My favorite Sweet 100s Tommy toes. Why they are called this I have no Idea. Acidic and sharp where fully ripe. Sweet (kinda) when picked and eaten just as the hint of color starts.

For the acidic taste try anything tagged as heirloom.

No doubt.

But here are some reasons gardeners strive to grow their own - from the garden the past 2 years.

Did you use bell pepper plants or seeds? Do you happen to know what the name was? I planted 2 plants this year and they have only produced about 7 or 8 peppers so far and I have 3 more little ones on one of the plants now. They don't seem to get much bigger than a baseball but they have good flavor. Just wish they would produce a few more/or grow a little bigger.

We have used both seed and plants. Same results-average. But more satisfying to grow from seed.

Like orangeblooded2 said, tommy toes are the best, kinda like wild strawberries.

We grew these tomatoes. I like the big yallerens. You make a sandwich and just one slice covers the whole sandwich.

My wife sat out plants. Almost all the plants in 08 had lots of peppers on them. Last year was another story, the ground was too wet.

This picture was a product a gardening competition I got into last year with a friend from San Diego. Of course, they get started in February, so I had to do something to offset his early start.

He didn't buy it. :post-4-1090547912:

OB2 & MWR , Thanks for the suggestions on the 'maters. I will try next yr when I get off this lil rock I'm on now.

Sooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn.

That's some good looking produce you've got there.

The sad thing about this is that after you've had a home grown tomato nothing else will do. For example, in cold weather you go out to eat and get a tomato on your burger. Most likely, it will taste like cardboard. And be almost as chewy.

Enjoy those tomatoes.

Here's a picture of one of my watermelons from the 7th.

And I think this is the same melon on the 18th.

But I only have about 3 or 4 that are doing any good so far.

Nice! I want to grow a watermelon. A lady that I work with is gonna have about 75 this year. Her jusband has some wood planks that he sets under them when they get about the size of a golf ball. He says it keeps them from getting ground rot. I might plant one plant next eyar and see what happens.

If you ever get a chance to go to Disney's Epcot, they have this "behind the seeds" tour that costs extra but damn well worth it. Their technology in growing vegetables is awesome. They had the worlds record tomato plant that produced 33,000 tomatoes. They supply all of Disneys restaurants with veggies and fish too. Really cool tour for those who like gardening. They even delve into insect control by all natural means. No pesticides allowed at Disney. Highly recommend this tour.:good!:

We didn't take the tour but rode the boat that takes you through there. I've also seen a special about it on tv. It's amazing. Pumpkins and watermelons that never touch the ground...
