I started strawberries this year in raised beds and just transplanted the first set of runners

Pyramid boxes are great for stawberries. My family used to have several acres of strawberries as a kid. They didn't like me to pick them very much. I ate more than I put in the basket....

I have everything in raised beds and herbs in a old horse troft.
Planted rows last year and the deer had a fiest on it.

I am afraid of this too. Raccoons are bad here as well. Any suggestions on guarding against getting robbed by these creatures?

I have a small one.

5 rows of mountain half runner beans
1 row of cucumbers
1 row of okra
1 row of hot banana peppers
1 row of squash
8 rows of corn (silver queen/peaches and cream)
15 tomato plants
and last but certainly not least 11 Charelston Grey watermelon plantsPosted via VolNation Mobile

Best old-time watermelon there is. I usually grow Crimson Sweets, but I went back and growing Jubilees this year.

I'm growing a sweet corn called Mirai. Second year I have grown it and it beats anything I have ever grown before( Peaches and cream/Silver queen). Wont grow anything else.

Never eaten that corn. It must be really good to beat peaches and cream. I can make a meal out of that alone.

Know of anywhere to get the old timey beans like pink tips or turkey craw?

Bean Catalog

I have about 8 quart jars of WildGoose pea seeds I saved from last year. IMO, they are a better pea than plain pinkeye purple hull.

Have you had any die this year?

I lost about 30 plants because of all the rain we had in May. Stems rotted right at ground level

I lost 1 roma plant. I was very late getting my garden out this year. We had some wild temp swings here in the mountains. Was not safe to plant earlier.

Thanks for the bean info. My best memories of my granny are of her cooking out of her garden using the old timey veggies. She died when I was 6, over 33 years ago, so she was a heck of a cook to make that impression. We never had trouble finding help to put up hay or tobacco because everyone wanted to eat her massive lunch spreads.

My grandma did the same. They raised a garden every year and so did my parents, so I get it honest. Then I met my wife and her family did the same. We can plenty of veggies every year, which is kinda unusual for people my age. I've just always did it and its nice to be able to pass that on to my kids

I enjoy it, too. It's nice to know that you have food if an emergency pops up. Plus with the price of groceries, it can save a bunch of money. I would be lying if I said it wasn't cool to see and take part in growing your own food. I fish a lot also. Walleye almost exclusively. I get the best of both worlds: recreation and a dang good food for my family. I guess it is a feeling of being self-sufficient adds to the coolness.

Exactly!

I hunt and fish as well

I need to buy another freezer this year to have room for everything. Every year, each garden( I have two) get bigger. Plus, I'm thinking about breaking another spot up for next year

I could have a larger one. I have 100 acres of river bottom land. Have deer, turkey, squirrel, geese, and 35-45 head of cattle depending on calves. Me and the ladies aren't starving! Lol.

I have 200 roma plants for my tomato sauce I can, collards, mustards, kale, cabbage, and a whole mess of cayenne that I'm trying to make my own Tabasco with.

I bought some tabasco pepper plants to do the same exact thing

This is my third year trying it. First year chalked up to a learning experience. Last year was progress but too much vinegar taste, not enough pepper.

I have a small raised garden made out off cross ties. 3 tomato plants, 3 okra plants, raddishes, green, yellow, and yummy bell peppers, jlaps, serrano chilis, cucmbers, and 2 zucchini squash.

Hope you did not use railroad ties- I have read where the creosote can leach into soil and cause problems
