I've hit 1 shot with a 5 iron. I hit it OK, but it wasn't enough to tell much. It would be tough to make me part with the trusty X-16's.
I've hit blades since I started and can't get my eye adjusted to those large top lines. I like the look of the new forged job and and considering ditching the blades for the first time. I still hit 'em well, but I know that a few of my misses would be better if I found a cavity back that suited my eye. I don't buy all of the workability garbage, but aesthetics matter to me.

That is really why I chose the Mizuno's over the Calloway's; from the top, they look more like a blade, where the Calloway looks like a spaceship. They are certainly fancy, but I liked the traditional look better, probably because my last set (Ping Eyes) had a traditional look as well.

On another note, I still haven't been able to start golf season due to the elbow. MRI is scheduled for tomorrow, so wish me luck.

I played all through high school with a set of Hogan Apex PC's. I'll never forget the way the 2 iron looked like a butter knife when you addressed the ball.

Nothing had quite the look of those old Apex PC's. Look at how narrow the sole is on this 7 iron. It looks like you could perform surgery with it.

yeah...the older models look like toothpicks compared to the newer technology clubs, my newer model Hogans still have the classic blade look and feel but have a small cavity back for a slight bit of forgiveness.

started with a set of Mizuno MP-9s and the 2 iron was the scariest club on earth, until I could hit it, then it was my go to tee shot. Probably couldn't get it airborne today.

I remember when I added a Hogan Edge 1 iron to my Apex PC's and thought that it was the most forgiving club in the world.

hallelujah to the smooth talkin' hybrids. I've been a purist for years, but am actually considering replacing my 3 iron like I did the 2. my set'll look like my dads sack of about 4 irons and 17 woods.

I just replaced my 3 iron about a month ago. I feel like an 80 year old when I look down and see 2 hybrids in the bag, but there's no doubt they are easier to hit. I've still got the 3 iron in the bag (an illegal 15th club) just to make myself feel better.

Part of the reason it took me so long was trying to finding a combination of clubs that made sense yardage wise.

That's the very reason I've not done it. Of course, in an odd twist of fate, I hit my 3 and 4 iron better than I hit my five. I'm about 98% sure it's just a mental thing that I make myself focus better w/ the 3 and 4 but whatever. I hit my 3 about 205, my 4 about 195-200 and I have an old school steel shafted 17 degree original Adams Tight Lies that I hit 220. The new hybrids I hit the 4 iron about 220. I gotta have something in between because I'm never going to hit my 5 iron far enough to cover the gap that I'll create.

I'm willing to bet that the swing weight or the frequency of the shaft in that 5 is completely different than the clubs around it. You might have that checked or give the lie / loft angles a look.

Only thing holding me back is the length of the hybrids and the tinge less control. Could probably cut them down to standard iron length and lose some of the distance.

i play now and then with a guy from the "Nike" tour and he hits 2 hybrids (well I might add)

The problem I had was controlling the hook bias that most hybrids seem to have. I used to be able to go at a 2 iron as hard as I wanted to without the slightest concern that I would ever hook it. I can hook a hybrid off the world.

I overcame that by sticking a 3 iron shaft in a 19 degree hybrid. The heavier steel shaft really got the club under control for me.

The original Bridgestone is the only one I could find and it is an exceptional club. I've got it with the Aldila NV 85X hybrid shaft and it acts like a club made for better players (read: can move both ways and hit it high or low). I think all of the others are heel heavy unless the TM TP line is neutral.

I can hit a cut with a hybrid, but it scares me to death. Every time I set up to fade a shot with a hybrid I get the ominous feeling that a heat seeking "double cross" is about to happen.

nah.. it's just me. nine times out of ten i come through too quick with it. for whatever reason, I don't like the five and I haven't in any iron I've ever hit. Typically I play 4 wedges and so if i play both my 15 degree callaway and my 17 degree adams, I leave out the five. I can crush the thing at the driving range, just never comfortable on the course. It's just a standard black dot Ping i3 blade. I just work harder on the three and four making sure i stay down and let the club bring me through so i don't get in front of the ball. Hit my 3 iron 215 yds today to reach a par 5 in two at graysburg hills. shot an 82. not bad, not great. replaced my cleveland 588 gun metal 56 and 60 degree wedges with new 588 dsg rtg wedges and I'm still learning with them.

double cross to double bogey. see if you can pick up a used Bridgestone J33 hybrid. you'll be very surprised

why not hit the 5 about 160 until you're comfortable with it and not concerned with how far it goes. it's tough to play well with a hole like that in your set. the knock down 4 is a mighty tough shot

I'll look into it. There's store in Augusta, GA that I go by every so often because they have a huge selection of used clubs.
