The Golf Thread

I just got a weekend job working security for The Standard Club; a private course in Duluth, GA.

One of the perks just so happens to be free employee golf on Mondays!

Gonna hit it today if the weather holds out. I hear she's a treacherous course!

Anyone just have a brand they can absolutely not hit whatsoever? It doesn't matter if it's a driver, fairways, or irons, I can not hit a Callaway whatsoever. I'm talking like 50 yard putt-like drives. I demoed them and the guys at the tent couldn't even figure it out. I told them I had never been able to hit Callaways. Then I proceeded to the Ping tent right next to them and blew everything up with G5's. Same with Clevelands. Is this just me?

I hear you. My son has a set of the Jr. Callaways and I can't hit those things at all. Shafts are to whippy and they just seem awfully short to me.

Basically any 2 Iron on the planet. :)

What is the best reasonably priced golf course in Knoxville? I've only played the Wee Course a couple times since I've been in Knoxville and it's already gotten really old.

Spent the last 2 days hanging out at the Heritage. I can't imagine that there are too many tournaments that are more laid back than the Heritage when the weather is good.

what about when the weather is bad? the tournament is uptight?

I know it sounds goofy, but yes.

You try playing that narrow golf course with small greens in a 20 mph wind and tell me how relaxing you think it is.

Depends on what you consider "reasonably priced."

For my money, the best combination of quality and price is Three Ridges.

I'd avoid Dead Horse Lake like the plague. That course blows. Poorly designed, poorly maintained, overpriced. They can charge that much because it sits dead in the middle of West Knoxville.

River Islands is a stunningly beautiful course. It's tough - very tough, even from the whites. It's in Kodak, TN, a bit pricier ($40-45 range), but it's still only a 20-30 minute drive from most of Knoxville.

The Wee Course is one of the better Par 3 courses I've ever played. Although I've got to much pride to hit a driver at a par 3 course, even if one of the holes is 255 from the tips.

Well, I was all set to go play my first round of the season, but it turns out my cart is dead. I can't imagine why--it has only been sitting idle in the shed since August. Still, since I am morally opposed to renting a cart on my home course and reserve walking for courses much nicer than my own, it looks like it might be next week before I start moving earth one divot at a time on the links.

Then again, my Club Car key will fit any Club Car, and there are a few unused parked beside mine...

BPV, for all our talks about how much i love my 60 degree, I have used it about 4 times the past 3 rounds.

Tried it once on a next to impossible downhill lie chip from right behind the green because i knew everything was going to run way past the hole and i knew i had to at least get it slightly in the air...

This year I have also discovered I'm a lights out chipper with my 56 in normal situations. I'm sure now that I have officially brought this issue up, it will disappear during my next outing either thursday or sat morning.

I have also discovered I have lost about 10-15 yards on all my wedges when I hit them full. To my knowledge I'm not doing anything different, but with how little I played last year, I think it may have something to do with the fact that my 56 and 60 degree are the 588 DSG RTGs while before that they were the original 588 gunmetals.

I know the sole grind is different between the two clubs, but my original 60 degree was ground down to essentially the same specs. Anyone have any suggestions where I'm losing my distance?

I recommend Red Bull . . . or maybe you're "cupping it" at the bottom of your swing and creating loft rather than hitting down on it.

could you elaborate? I've always had a very high trajectory, but I was typically hitting a full 52 110 yards, my 56 90-95 yards and my 60 70 yards.

Now the 52 goes about 90, i hit the 56 3 times from the same spot and my best was probably 80. the 60 degree might go 55.

what bothers me the most is that for the first 6 years that I played while my irons could sometimes be suspect, I always made up for it with my wedges. They were my best weapon. I've worked so hard at shoring up my iron play and it's the best it's ever been even when i was playing on a regular basis. Now I just have no faith that when i'm 75 yards out that I can get it there.

Cupping is a problem with an early hand release that causes your left wrist to be cupped at impact rather than flat. The result is that instead of hitting down on the ball with a de-lofted club, you actually add loft to the club and hit it straight up or hit it fat.

If this is your problem, just back the ball up a little in your stance and start hitting what feel like 3/4 punch shots and it will shock you how far they go in comparison to your "full" swing. The loft on the Lob Wedge will take care of the ball flight.

Of course, if you are coming over the top, have a bad swing path, a sway, a bad grip, bad alignment etc . . . none of that advice will help you. :)

thanks GA. I'm planning a trip to the range tomorrow to work on nothing but wedges, so I will give it a shot. That was supposed to be the plan for today, but I had a lot more free time and the weather was beautiful. I went to my old home course and walked nine by myself just to work in game.

Sitting here playing it out in my head what you're saying makes sense. I slowed everything about my swing down over the past year and a half and I think i might inadvertently be "cupping" my wedges. Releasing my hands early sounds very possible. thanks again, I really appreciate it, but umm, don't expect any sort of lesson fees or anything!
