The Golf Thread

Man is playing golf with his wife and hits into a barn house. They walk over and the man says he will drop and the wife says no punch it out. The man hits the ball it hits off a wall and bounces back and hits the wife in the head and kills her.

A month later he playing the same hole and hits into the barn again. He goes to drop and a man says no just punch it out. The man says NO I did that a month ago and it was not good. The guy asked the man what happen. Man says I got an 8.

PW, 54 and 60 here.
I had the same setup up until about a month ago. My PW is what I would consider strong (46), so I ditched the 54 for a 52 and dropped the 60 for a 58. Initially I did it so there wouldn't be such a large gap between the distances on my full PW and SW shots, but more than anything what has helped me is taking the lob wedge out of the bag. I was hitting it around the green entirely too much for little pitch shots and constantly coming up short.

I'm effectively playing with a PW, a gap wedge and a very weak Sand Wedge. I've never had a problem hitting a flop shot even when everybody was carrying 56 degree Sand Wedges, so I really don't miss the Lob Wedge all that much.

I play too many elevated greens (and don't hit enough of them) to drop my 60. If I played in GA it would be the first club out of my bag.

I'm up here just above the Fall Line. My home course has some pretty serious elevation changes.

Not all of GA is that flat, scrub pine infested sandy tundra that you're used to down toward Savannah. :p

You probably hit more greens than I do as well......

I don't know about that. I tend to hit it all over the place lately. Honestly though, there's just not that much you can do with a 60 degree wedge that you can't do with a 58.

I play old school style blade irons, so my PW is 49 deg.

I've actually found myself hitting more PW chips lately because I tend to get them much closer to the hole, even on tough shots. It's been a big eye opener for me.

On a side note....anybody making Ryder Cup plans yet. I think my tickets are in the works. If anyone is coming up we should consider a golf outing pryor to the event.

I can't imagine that I'm not going, so let's try and find a way to do it. I don't have any plans in place yet, but a couple friends and I typically make it.

Went to the driving range today and I have developed one of the worst slices imaginable w/ my driver and I have no idea what I have done to cause it. It is only w/ my driver. I've always had a little bit of a slice but so far this year it has been extremely bad and its to the extent that it is unplayable right now. It was so bad yesterday that I just had to abandon my driver after the 4th hole. Any suggestions?

Similar vein:

Man snaps at home and beats his wife to death with one of his golf clubs. He comes to his senses and calls the cops. He tells the cop "I just lost it and grabbed a 4 or a 5 iron and started hitting her" Cop asks "Well which was it? A four or a five? Man says "Put me down for a 4"

When I start to slice my driver it is because I'm falling out of the shot - my giant ass is dragging my body back, away from the ball. When I keep my weight on the balls of my feet and stay in the shot, the slice is gone.

I've got a buddy trying to work out coming in from England. If he does, I'm sure I'll figure out a way to get up there. I'll let you know when I find out for sure.

Maybe you can teach me how to use that 60:)

Better yet, maybe you can show me how to hit the short grass so I won't need it.

take a couple weeks off, then quit.

Seriously, big slices are caused by several things and it's really hard to say here what might be the problem.

The physics of the slice is an very open clubface relative to the direction of travel of the clubhead. If the face is square to the line at impact for you, then the clubhead is traveling hard left at the ball to create the slice. Practice setting up a long tee or golf pencil to the front right of the ball (about an inch away on a 45 deg angle from target line). Practice clipping that pencil after contact for a while. Forget that the ball might go right some, keep swinging out through the ball toward that pencil. It exaggerates the inside path a bit, but is much better than the hard outside in thing you're likely doing.

Might help, but again, it's very hard to really help without seeing. If you've played well regularly in the past, it could very well be a drastically changed setup position that you just can't feel or see.

just think Balance and Tempo

Played Rarity Pointe today (new course/super-swanky neighborhood just across the Fort Loudon Dam on 321).

First, the course is demanding. Tons of elevation change on just about every hole (especially for lake frontage). Nothing is "straight away." The greens are difficult to borderline ridiculous in places -- lots of tier-work and even moguls. The course was in good shape, overall, for being so young. Much of the rough and OB are in early growth or still under construction. My buddy stated after the round: "If you could learn to score well here, you could score well anywhere."

The public price of $75 is way too high, but if you are "with a group" (member of a non-profit organization, etc.), it's $50. Find someone to claim before you call.

I played OK -- went out rather well (for me) in 42, especially given that I pissed away a couple of shots due to not knowing the course. My short game, though, was much improved. I'm now a true believer in the Pelz series. I haven't even finished the first book yet, but my shots from inside 90 yards are no longer pure guesswork. I rarely used my 60 wedge before, and I probably hit it 8-9 times today. Also, I've been focusing on speed and trying to relax when putting, and I probably rolled it as good as I ever have.

Anyway, I'm excited. I'm playing there on Wednesday in a tournament, so I'll report back!

Oh, GA, I went to 4 wedges last year. I hit my PW about 125, the 52 about 105-110, 56 about 95. I don't really ever try to hit my 60 full, but it's money when I need to loft one in from 50 or less, and great out of the sand to a short pin or off of difficult lies around the green. All but the PW are Callaway X-tours with the MD grooves in the 60.

Lex, there is about a 50/50 chance I make it up for the Cup, right now I am committed to a function at the workplace at that time but that date is subject to change....if I do make it I'd like to hit the links with you while there.

Played bogey golf for 9 Sunday, give or take a mulligan or two. It is hard to get too serious when the course hasn't come in yet; we're probably still 2 weeks away from lush greenery here, and the greens are still like putting on a fuzzy peach. I wasn't all that disappointed, but it looks like I might have to push back my timetable for making the Senior Tour.

Nice to see that temperatures are falling to the 30s for the next couple of nights. Should make for a friggin' cold first 9 Wednesday AM.

Salt the wound, salt the wound. At least I can drive or boat to Neyland from here.

Oh, and have a Happy Hurricane Season. :p
good points...But that's why they make airplanes. My plan for wednesday is....
exam at 7am.
18 holes of golf in shorts and polo.
beach for a few hours
work for about 5 hours....come home.
It's not tennessee, but it's not too bad.
