Focus of debt talks to narrow without deal by Friday, sources say - CNN.com

Translation: If the GOP will not deal today on a $4 trillion plan (or thereabouts) for deficit reduction that includes eliminating tax loopholes and Bush tax cuts to go along with trillions in spending cuts, the President is going to tell them they have to sign off on a no strings attached debt ceiling increase.

If the GOP then balks at that, politically the mess is squarely in the lap of Boehner and Cantor. If that happens, its adios for Republican controlled House or Senate.

blame the Repubs all you want but this will be linked to Obama. He's the one refusing to issue real cuts like they are requesting and is acting like a child.

I don't believe the GOP stormed out of a meeting.

Without real cuts this is useless and we will continue to go down the BAU path to ruin. The gov't has the money to operate yet claim they need more. It's absolutely ridiculous for anyone to believe sending more money to DC is a good answer

i'll bet anyone any amount of money they want that obama doesn't allow even a technical default. blaming the gop here is rather ridiculous. obama is talking out of his ass again.

Pretending he can wash his hands ofit because he tossed out the only real alternatives is stupid.

my concern is obama delays some social security payments or something just to prove a point and for political reasons. i can just see him now telling the old farts the republicans don't want them to get their money.

For full disclosure, I do support cuts coupled with tax hikes. I see it as the most honest way to tackle a problem this large.

No, but he can honestly say that the Republicans are willing to cause a delay in the checks so as to resist getting rid of the Bush tax cuts.

Within the last few weeks, yes.

I know nothing about this site. Just did a quick google search.

Debt Ceiling Talks Hit an Impasse as Eric Cantor Walks Out - Politics - The Atlantic Wire

The Dems and the Repubs are acting like spoiled brats.

withdraw is not really the same as pushing your chair back and walking out in a huff

so as to resist raising taxes

fyp since this seems to be a difficult concept

why? What has the US gov't ever shown they are serious about using the extra money to pay down debt? Do they have enough money to do what they are supposed to do (and nothing more) and still make a dent? You may be willing to send your money willingly to these idiots but I'm not

No meaningful cuts? What if it were $3 trillion in cuts and $1 trillion in revenues, for total deficit reduction of $4 trillion?

You make a valid point, but I think that is what the GOP has to insist on -- that the revenue generated by eliminating the Bush tax cuts go directly to paying down the debt. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Does it matter if you leave your wife during or after marriage counseling?

or cut spending and use that money while letting the people keep what they earn. Of course that requires weaning too many people off the gov't and won't happen

Gulp, I kinda agree with lg on the last part. From what I have heard, the Bush tax cuts would only be eliminated for 'the wealthy'. I know that will fire off a shiz storm of criticism, but I don't have a problem with that, if I am being honest.

yeah what's a little more straw on the camel's back. Can't see a problem there

I see no fun in forcing others to pay for my debts
